  2. My Thesis • People should be allowed to follow their hearts and their religion. It says so in the 1st amendment of the Bill of Rights. • If someone decides to have more than one wife or husband then that is their decision.

  3. Information • Bigamy is when you are legally married to more than one person at the same time. • The root word “bi” means two but it does not only mean two mates.

  4. There are two types of bigamist, the dishonest bigamist and the honest bigamist. • The dishonest bigamist’s wives to not know about each other. • Honest bigamist’s wives know about each other and accept it.

  5. Laws • A single count of Bigamy is charged against an accused bigamist for each of his secondary wives. • For example, if a man has 3 wives, he would be charged with two counts of bigamy.

  6. In the commonwealth of Virginia bigamy is a felony and is not terribly common throughout the state.

  7. Locally Charged Man • A Fairfax man named Charles Edward Hicks, 61, was charged about 5 years ago with bigamy and had to go in front of the grand jury. • Mr. Hicks will be charged on 2 accounts of bigamy.

  8. Mr. has two wives, but has been married 7 times. • Three of his marriages took place while he was legally married to someone else.

  9. Sister Wives • Sister wives is a hit show on TLC.

  10. Kody Brown is 41 years old and is the husband to the 4 sister wives. • He has a total of 13 kids that are his, plus 3 step children that his wife Robyn brought into the marriage.

  11. The little town that they were from was a pretty common place for bigamy. • Then they moved to Las Vegas and it was looked down upon. • Bigamy in Utah is fairly common through most parts of the state.

  12. Meri is the only one legally married to Kody Brown. • They have been married 20 years. • Meri and Kody have one kid together. • She was his first wife but she knew that he would add more into the mix at some point. • Meri was fired from her job after the show started airing and her boss seen her lifestyle.

  13. Kody and his 2nd wife Janelle have 6 children together. • Janelle was best friends with meri that’s how she got to know Kody. • She works full time and supports the family with her large paycheck.

  14. Christine is the 3rd wife to Kody. • Christine just gave birth to the youngest of all the children, and her name is truely. • Her and Kody have 6 children together. • She is the stay at home mom who does most of the cooking and taking care of the kids

  15. Robyn is the 4th wife to Kody. • Robyn came into the marriage with 3 of her own kids, this upset Kody and the other 3 wives.

  16. Sister Wives Coummunity • People in their new neighborhood don’t particularly care for the marriage. • Many of the neighbors are speaking out that they do not like having to explain this lifestyle to their children

  17. Utah Bigamy Compound Busted • Tom Green is 52 years old and has 5 wives and 29 children. • He lives with his family in a remote compound in the Utah Desert.

  18. Tom Green faces up to 25 years in prison, and 25,000 $ in fines. • He was charged with 4 counts of bigamy and one on failing to pay child support.

  19. Green married all 5 of his wives, some were young as 14. • 3 of his wives are pregnant right now. • His 5 wives includes 2 sets of sisters. • All his wives eventually divorced him for wellfare but they all still lived with him.

  20. Religion • Mr. Green is a fundamentalist Mormon. And he said that having several wives was a god given choice. • He argued that it was his constitutional right to follow the religion he wanted. • After being prosecuted, Green vowed to continue his lifestyle. • He didn’t serve any time he just paid a fine and had to divorce all his wives.
