  1. All you always wanted to know about 3GPP …but were too afraid to ask. The 3GPP Seminar

  2. The 3GPP SeminarModule 9 • Numbering scheme for TSs and TRs

  3. Spec numbering scheme • Find the structure in 3GPP TR 21.900 • Also on the web http://www.3gpp.org/specification-numbering At first sight, the numbering scheme for TSs and TRs may appear chaotic. But … it is organized chaos. Spec numbers are not allocated on a per-TSG basis or on a per-WG basis, but on a functional basis. Of course, particular WGs are responsible for particular functional areas of the system, so it is possible to have a reasonable guess at the group to whom a given Spec belongs on the basis of its number.

  4. To understand the numbering scheme, it is necessary to go back in history a while … GSM, Phase 1 to Phase 2+ Release 98 01.-series System requirements, rules, vocabulary, … 02.-series Stage 1 (service requirements) 03.-series Stage 2 (abstract architecture) 04.-series Stage 3 (protocols, mobile – network) 05.-series Radio physical layer, data link layer, radio resource protocols 06.-series CODECs 07.-series Data communication 08.-series Stage 3 Base station to mobile switching centre protocols 09.-series Stage 3 Intra-core-network layer 3 protocols 10.-series Work plan management (internal progress tracking reports) 11.-series SIM, terminal test specs 12.-series OA&M 13.-series European regulatory test specs

  5. to ETSI TC MSG When 3GPP was established, the intention was to re-use as much of the GSM legacy as possible. GSM 01.-series System requirements, rules, vocabulary, … 02.-series Stage 1 (service requirements) 03.-series Stage 2 (abstract architecture) 04.-series Stage 3 (protocols, mobile – network 05.-series Radio physical layer, data link layer, radio resource protocols 06.-series CODECs 07.-series Data communication 08.-series Stage 3 Base station to mobile switching centre protocols 09.-series Stage 3 Intra-core-network layer 3 protocols 10.-series Work plan management (internal progress tracking reports) 11.-series SIM, terminal test specs 12.-series OA&M 13.-series European regulatory test specs UMTS Release 99 21.-series System requirements, rules, vocabulary, … 22.-series Stage 1 (service requirements) 23.-series Stage 2 (abstract architecture) 24.-series Stage 3 (protocols, mobile – network 25.-series Radio physical layer, data link layer, radio resource protocols 26.-series CODECs 27.-series Data communication 28.-series Stage 3 Base station to mobile switching centre protocols 29.-series Stage 3 Intra-core-network layer 3 protocols 30.-series Work plan management (internal progress tracking reports) 31.-series SIM, terminal test specs 32.-series OA&M

  6. When 3GPP was established, the intention was to re-use as much of the GSM legacy as possible. Especially in some series, there was almost total commonality. GSM 01.-series System requirements, rules, vocabulary, … 02.-series Stage 1 (service requirements) 03.-series Stage 2 (abstract architecture) 04.-series Stage 3 (protocols, mobile – network 05.-series Radio physical layer, data link layer, radio resource protocols 06.-series CODECs 07.-series Data communication 08.-series Stage 3 Base station to mobile switching centre protocols 09.-series Stage 3 Intra-core-network layer 3 protocols 10.-series Work plan management (internal progress tracking reports) 11.-series SIM, terminal test specs 12.-series OA&M 13.-series European regulatory test specs UMTS Release 99 21.-series System requirements, rules, vocabulary, … 22.-series Stage 1 (service requirements) 23.-series Stage 2 (abstract architecture) 24.-series Stage 3 (protocols, mobile – network 25.-series Radio physical layer, data link layer, radio resource protocols 26.-series CODECs 27.-series Data communication 28.-series Stage 3 Base station to mobile switching centre protocols 29.-series Stage 3 Intra-core-network layer 3 protocols 30.-series Work plan management (internal progress tracking reports) 31.-series USIM, terminal test specs 32.-series OA&M

  7. In some series, almost all available numbers had been exhausted. So in the 3GPP numbering scheme, the range was increased from two digits after the dot to three: 02.xx → 22.xxx So, for example, an old GSM R98 spec 02.16 “International Mobile Station Equipment Identities (IMEI)” became, in R99, the common GSM and UMTS 22.016 “International Mobile Station Equipment Identities (IMEI)” and 02.16 does not exist in R99 and beyond.

  8. 02.16 “International Mobile Station Equipment Identities (IMEI)” became, in R99, the common GSM and UMTS 22.016 “International Mobile Station Equipment Identities (IMEI)” and 02.16 does not exist in R99 and beyond. On the other hand 03.71 “LCS stage 3” divided, in R99, into separate GSM and UMTS specs 03.71 “LCS stage 3” and 23.171 “UMTS LCS stage 3” and both exist in R99.

  9. A brief digression onto GSM spec version numbering • Early drafts of specs are version 0.x.x • More stable drafts are version 1.x.x • Drafts proposed for approvalare version 2.x.x • On approval, GSM specs becameversion 3.x.x = Phase 1 • Or version 4.x.x = Phase 2 • Or version 5.x.x = Phase 2+ R96 • Or version 6.x.x = Phase 2+ R97 • Or version 7.x.x = Phase 2+ R98 • Or version 8.x.x = Phase 2+ R99

  10. The same scheme was adopted for UMTS … • Early drafts of specs are version 0.x.x • More stable drafts are version 1.x.x • Drafts proposed for approvalare version 2.x.x • On approval, UMTS specs becameversion 3.x.x = R99

  11. Prior to R99, the Release of a spec could be determined simply by looking at its version number: • 3.x.x = Phase 1 • 4.x.x = Phase 2 • 5.x.x = Phase 2+ R96 • 6.x.x = Phase 2+ R97 • 7.x.x = Phase 2+ R98 • 8.x.x = Phase 2+ R99

  12. But in R99 GSM systems were composed of some old, single-purpose, specs such as03.71 version 8.x.xand some new, dual-purpose, specs such as22.016 version 3.x.x This made it difficult for outsiders without knowledge of this history to comprehend !

  13. So …

  14. For the next Release it was decided to renumber all the “pure” GSM specs : GSM R99 01.-series System requirements, rules, vocabulary, … 02.-series Stage 1 (service requirements) 03.-series Stage 2 (abstract architecture) 04.-series Stage 3 (protocols, mobile – network) 05.-series Radio physical layer, data link layer, radio resource protocols 06.-series CODECs 07.-series Data communication 08.-series Stage 3 Base station to mobile switching centre protocols 09.-series Stage 3 Intra-core-network layer 3 protocols 10.-series Work plan management (internal progress tracking reports) 11.-series SIM, terminal test specs 12.-series OA&M GSM Rel-4 41.-series System requirements, rules, vocabulary, … 42.-series Stage 1 (service requirements) 43.-series Stage 2 (abstract architecture) 44.-series Stage 3 (protocols, mobile – network) 45.-series Radio physical layer, data link layer, radio resource protocols 46.-series CODECs 47.-series Data communication 48.-series Stage 3 Base station to mobile switching centre protocols 49.-series Stage 3 Intra-core-network layer 3 protocols 50.-series Work plan management (internal progress tracking reports) 51.-series SIM, terminal test specs 52.-series OA&M

  15. And, to align with the new UMTS spec number format, an extra digit was added after the dot: 05.xx → 45.0xx So, for example, an old GSM R99 spec 05.04 “Modulation” became, in Rel-4, the (GSM-specific) 45.004 “Modulation” and 05.04 does not exist in Rel-4 and beyond.

  16. This allowed harmonization of the version numbers: 05.04 “Modulation” version 8.x.x = R99 became 45.004 “Modulation” version 4.x.x = Rel-4 • In Rel-4 (and beyond), all specs have a common version first digit:45.004 version 4.x.x22.016 version 4.x.x … and this is why it is called “Release 4” !

  17. Since the initial re-numbering, other spec series have been added. GSM later 41.-series System requirements, rules, vocabulary, … 42.-series Stage 1 (service requirements) 43.-series Stage 2 (abstract architecture) 44.-series Stage 3 (protocols, mobile – network) 45.-series Radio physical layer, data link layer, radio resource protocols 46.-series CODECs 47.-series Data communication 48.-series Stage 3 Base station to mobile switching centre protocols 49.-series Stage 3 Intra-core-network layer 3 protocols 50.-series Work plan management (internal progress tracking reports) 51.-series SIM, terminal test specs 52.-series OA&M 55.-series GSM early 01.-series System requirements, rules, vocabulary, … 02.-series Stage 1 (service requirements) 03.-series Stage 2 (abstract architecture) 04.-series Stage 3 (protocols, mobile – network) 05.-series Radio physical layer, data link layer, radio resource protocols 06.-series CODECs 07.-series Data communication 08.-series Stage 3 Base station to mobile switching centre protocols 09.-series Stage 3 Intra-core-network layer 3 protocols 10.-series Work plan management (internal progress tracking reports) 11.-series SIM, terminal test specs 12.-series OA&M UMTS 21.-series System requirements, rules, vocabulary, … 22.-series Stage 1 (service requirements) 23.-series Stage 2 (abstract architecture) 24.-series Stage 3 (protocols, mobile – network) 25.-series Radio physical layer, data link layer, radio resource protocols 26.-series CODECs 27.-series Data communication 28.-series Stage 3 Base station to mobile switching centre protocols 29.-series Stage 3 Intra-core-network layer 3 protocols 30.-series Work plan management (internal progress tracking reports) 31.-series SIM, terminal test specs 32.-series OA&M 33.-series Security 34.-series UE & USIM test specs 35.-series Algorithms
