A Brief History • began in 377-288 B.C. when Greek horticulturalist Theophrastus speculated that the roots of plants absorb nutrients • In the 1700s, Swedish Botanist C.V. Linnaeus developed a system for naming plants (binomial nomenclature) • Beginning in 1843, Gregor Mendel started the basis for genetics with his pea plant experiments.
What is Horticulture? • ...the growing, processing, and sale of ornamental plants, flowers, fruits, vegetables, and nuts • comes from the Latin hortus- “garden” and culture - “to grow”
Major Areas • Pomology • Olericulture • Ornamental Horticulture
Pomology • the planting, harvesting, processing, and marketing of fruits and nut crops. • Fruit Ex: Strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. • Nut Ex: Almonds, pecans, and walnuts.
Olericulture • the planting, harvesting, storing, processing, and marketing of vegetable crops.
Ornamental Horticulture • the growing and using of plants for their beauty • Divided into two areas: • Floriculture • Landscape Horticulture
Floriculture • the production, transportation, and use of flowers and foliage plants • cut flowers, flowering potted plants, foliage plants, and bedding plants are produced by greenhouse growers
What is a foliage plant? • plants grown for their beautiful colored leaves and stems • offices and businesses uses these plants to create an attractive interior environment
Cut Flowers vs. Flowering Plants • Cut flowers • sold to florists • made into bouquets • sold to the public • Flowering Potted Plants • sold in the containers in which they grow • used to plant in yards • in home decorations
Landscape Horticulture • It is producing and using plants to make outdoor environments more appealing. • Shrubs and ornamental trees are grown in nurseries before being transplanted. • A landscaper designs, plans, installs plants, and maintains plants in the outdoor environment.
Typical Horticulture Jobs • Landscape contractor • Garden center manager • Greenhouse grower • Nursery manager • Golf course superintendent • Urban forester • City horticulturist • Extension agent • Horticultural Ag teacher • Public garden horticulturist • Orchard manager or Vegetable grower • Plant, seed, chemical, and equipment sales • Plant or produce inspectors • Nursery or landscape business owner
Research Project • Choose a plant off the floriculture CDE plant ID list. • Research the plant you chose and use the questions on the handout as a guide. • You will decorate a tri-fold poster with the information you found. • Must be in color. • Include pictures and diagrams.
