NOAA Environmental Modeling System (NEMS) • Although DTC has to maintain competency in NEMS, for the near term there is little need for NEMS support for the research community. • -NEMS code is still very much under development • -Research community flexibility vs. operational “streamlining” • DTC should be capable of taking contributed components from the research community (that is of interest to Geoff) and integrating them into NEMS-based systems. • ESMF is the fundamental software component within NEMS that is a community standard and has been embraced by U.S. operational centers.

NOAA Environmental Modeling System (NEMS) • Some Questions • Can operations and research use the same code? • - Shared code repository with ops at DTC (or mirrored) • - HWRF and coupling within NEMS – Will there be a functional equivalent outside of NEMS? • - NMM-B may only be available in NEMS(?) • What is the longer term vision for NEMS and community? • - Will this be something that will have value for the research community? • - Could this have value for O2O (between centers) and not O2R? • -Will the flexibility increase?
