DHC Mission • Enhance the undergraduate experience of highly-motivated students • Prepare students for the challenges they will face in business, professional, or academic careers • Promote creative approaches to student learning and faculty development on campus • Provide a full range of academic services to students in the program

  5. DHC Student Enrollment2003-2004 • 148 first-year students • 157 second-year students • 95 third-year students • 47 fourth-year students • 447 TOTAL DHC Students!

  6. DHC Admission Criteria(Why you were selected) Selection based on evidence for • Enthusiasm, commitment and leadership • A desire to take an active role in one’s education • A willingness to learn in new and different ways • An ability to function effectively in a group learning environment • An understanding of the goals of the program GPA was not considered!

  7. 2nd Year Requirements • One Honors Course and One Honors Contract (or a Second Honors Course) • Honors challenge sections (HNR 90X) • Separate honors challenge courses • English, Comparative Literature • Traditional honors courses (OPTIONAL) • CHE 2AH, MAT 21AH, PHY 9HA • Honors contracts • Independent study in an upper-division course • AND One Honors Seminar(HNR 94)

  8. Transcript Notation • Good academic standing at end of each quarter • Complete DHC Course Requirements • Letter grade in all DHC Courses • Grade of “C” or better in each DHC Course • Overall “B” Average for all DHC Courses Lecture portion of your challenge section or honors contract counts as a DHC Course!

  9. 3rd Year Requirements • Two Honors Contracts and • One Honors Project(HNR 194) • Students work in teams • Real problems posed by outside interested parties • Sponsors include • business and professional community • government agencies • campus departments

  10. Recent 3rd Year Projects • International Teaching Assistants and Undergraduate Students at UC Davis - Teaching Resources Center • Implementing Universal Design & Visitability - Assemblywoman Lois Wolk • Maintaining Academic Standards in a Division-I Athletics Environment - Student Affairs

  11. Honors Seminars(HNR 94) • Collaborative, multi-disciplinary study of a complex contemporary problem • Find and analyze information • Develop your own opinions • Teamwork and group dynamics • Communication - oral & written • State of the art technology • Winter & Spring Quarters • Convocation

Honors Contracts(HNR 190X) • One-unit, letter-graded independent study • Increased student-faculty interaction • Initiate & pursue study beyond course requirements All Contracts • are in conjunction with letter-graded, upper division courses (100 +) during the quarter you are enrolled • require regular meetings with the instructor • culminate in a final product
