  1. AERMOD UPDATES Beth Echels Keith Zimmermann, P.E.

  2. The goal today is to discuss the progress and status of TCEQ’s implementation of AERMOD and how to streamline the review of your modeling.

  3. RECENT NEWS • RECENT CHANGES TO: • AERMET • AERMAP • AERMOD • OTHER NEWS

  4. AERMOD FAQs What are the most frequently asked questions that we hear from you?

  5. AERMET QUESTION • Choice of Preprocessed Meteorological Data • Should I use: • Low Roughness? • Medium Roughness? • High Roughness?

  6. Example of Low Roughness • Relatively flat area with homogeneous characteristics within the modeling domain. • Low grass • Few trees • Very low vegetation • Barren land, mostly desert

  7. Example of Medium Roughness • Typical rural or suburban area with a mixture of vegetation (low and high) and scattering of trees, and buildings within the modeling domain. • Tall crops and grasses • Scattering of trees • Suburban area • Mixture of low buildings and open areas

  8. Example of High Roughness • Typical urban and/or industrial area. Many buildings and structures or forested area. • Buildings and structures closely packed • Forested areas • Highly congested industrial area

  9. AERMAP QUESTION • Use of Terrain Data • Should I: • use DEMS? • zero out the receptors, etc.? • use the Non-regulatory default option?

  10. AERMOD QUESTION • May I use the Urban Option? • Requires: • Roughness parameter value • Population value • Is it appropriate?

  11. We must all rely on experience and judgment in the proper use of dispersion models to demonstrate a reasonable worst case.

  12. How can I streamline my modeling review?

  13. Recommendations • Use the model input “Templates” • Allows electronic submittal of data in a form conducive to automated checking.

  14. Recommendations • Document your work • Explain what you did and why you did it. • Use current guidance for your report format. • Submit all spreadsheets with calculations (Flare calculations, scaling calculations, etc.).

  15. Recommendations • Provide electronic copy of modeling input, output, and plot files. • Input, output, downwash, and plot files • Electronic plot plan
