  3. Shaky Bridge Wines • Shaky Bridge Wines sources fruit from 6 distinct Alexandra Basin vineyards • Each block has its own micro-climate and terroir • We are one of Central Otago’s largest Estate wine producers • The Homeblockvineyardwas first planted in 1973, with Pinot Noir and Gewurztraminer being planted in the early 1980s • We produce wine from some of the oldest vines in Central Otago • We now own or solely manage over 100 acres of vineyard land in Alexandra • Our vines range in age from 10 years to 30 years • The combination of different vineyard sites and a range of vine age allows us to create multi-layered wines of exceptional quality • Our focus to quality has garnered numerous awards and accolades over time • Our healthy and sustainable vineyard practices, winemaking style, strong branding and ongoing commitment to excellence, captures the essence of the Alexandra Basin • Our wines leave a lasting impression. They are “wines that move you”

  4. The historic ‘Shaky Bridge’ provides the inspiration for our branding. Nestled in a natural amphitheatre, the Shaky Bridge vineyard looks over its namesake under the ‘clock on the hill’. Built in the late 1870s, the Shaky Bridge spans the Manuherikia River providing an iconic memory of Central Otago’s gold mining heritage. As pioneering grape growers and winemakers in Central Otago, the Shaky Bridge is a very fitting brand icon for our wines

  5. Creating Shaky Bridge The Shaky Bridge label was first created in 2002 with a single Pinot Noir wine The second vintage of Shaky Bridge received international acclaim from media, trade and consumers alike The brand positioning is to provide an unpretentious wine experience that is based first and foremost on quality The quality of Shaky Bridge wines continues to create strong market demand since the initial release The goal is to appeal to wine lovers who are looking to be ‘moved’ by a fantastic sensory experience through wine The objective is to make Shaky Bridge wines that move you

  6. Winemaking Philosophy • let the land speak for itself ; we believe our wines are born in the vineyard • grow only coolclimate aromatic varieties, incorporating clonal selections, that are best suited to the Alexandra Sub-Region • Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay • follow sustainable vineyard practices to enhance soil health, create a balanced environment for our vines that produces high quality, physiologically balanced fruit at harvest • our sustainable vineyard practices minimize the need for weed sprays or sulphur, while utilising more natural fertilizers such as compost tea, kelp and molasses mixtures to promote soil health • control yields to ensure concentration, ripeness and intensity • identify and separate parcels prior to blending to enhance layered textures • destem and lightly crush all varieties prior to cold soak • cold soak all varieties to add texture and layers of flavour to our wines • use select quality French Oak Coopers – Cadus, Francois Freres, Saury

  7. Central Otago is a beautiful yet rugged region of New Zealand. Large schist stone outcrops cover the surrounding mountains, with wild thyme blanketing the foothills. Despite the heat of the summer, every winter we are reminded that growing wine in Central Otago is not for the faint of heart! CENTRAL OTAGO… …is New Zealand’s highest and only climatic ‘continentally influenced’ vine growing region. Alexandra’s mean sunshine hours are 2050 hours per annum – the highest in NZ We receive 900 – 1200 growing degree days. We have the lowest rainfall in New Zealand: 250 – 300mm per annum. The Alexandra basin is 100 meters above sea level, however other growing regions in Central Otago reach as high as 400 metres

  8. The Vineyards Shaky BridgeWines sources fruit from some of the oldest vines in Central Otago. The age and diversity of our vineyard sources gives us a variety of flavour profiles to ensure exceptional quality wines of multiple dimensions. Home Block 10 ha This vineyard surrounds the winery buildings and is split into small blocks, planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris. The vines are mostly spur pruned, and are planted in a east/west orientation in very sandy soils. Terrace Vineyard 14 ha Situated on the western side of the Alexandra Basin and overlooking the Clutha River, this block has an upper terrace planted solely to Pinot Noir with the lower terrace a mix of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris Airport 4 ha This block is dedicated to Pinot Noir. Clones 115, 10/5 and 5 are planted in the rocky soils that catch the summer breeze. The inter-rows planted with grass to aid biological control

  9. The Vineyards Pioneer Vineyard 21ha Our largest vineyard opposite the winery. Separated into four blocks and planted with Pinot Noir clones 5, 777, 115, 667, and 6, and also with new Pinot Gris 40a and 7a. Gewürztraminer, is also planted here. Rows are oriented east to west in gently undulating, deep, stony soils. The Fan 1.1ha A small block of Pinot Noir situated in a small pocket of very fertile alluvial soil, elevated slightly above the Home Block. Pinot noir clones 115, 5, and 10/5 are planted in an east to west aspect. The soils contain large chunks of rock that hold the heat well. Vines are spur pruned with the inter-rows planted with grass to aid biological control. Shaky Bridge Vineyard 1.5ha A smaller vineyard dedicated to Pinot Noir and located on rock soils adjacent to the Shaky Bridge Café on the Southern side of the Manuherikia just across the Shaky Bridge. We use select parcels from this unique, virtually frost free vineyard. The heat from the surrounding rock walls keeps this small vineyard a bit warmer all year, resulting in extremely ripe parcels of fruit.

  10. Long dry autumns, warm days and cool nights contribute tothe flavor intensity, colour and structureof our wines Our flagship wine reflects the distinctive trademark characteristics of Central Otago Pinot Noir…

  11. The Brands Offering a diversified portfolio of exciting brands, Shaky Bridge Wines creates wines consumers easily identify with and love to drink. Our brand impression is strong, creating lasting brand awareness and consumer loyalty. Shaky Bridge Artisan Series Our Artisan Series wines comprise Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Noir Rose.  The vine management of the parcels used in these wines is very much hands on with minimal, if any, use of machines.  Our best fruit is hand picked and hand crafted in our winery to create our Artisan Series wines.

  12. The Brands Offering a diversified portfolio of exciting brands, Shaky Bridge Wines creates wines consumers easily identify with and love to drink. Our brand impression is strong, creating lasting brand awareness and consumer loyalty. Shaky Bridge Pioneer Series From a younger vineyard first planted in 2000, this series includes Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.  Our Pioneer Series wines are a delicious entry point for consumers to try Central Otago wines and specifically Shaky Bridge.  Made in a round, consumer friendly, easy drinking style, these wines show excellent typicity of variety.  Given the price point, we gain many by the glass opportunities within the on premise trade, while retailers enjoy the volume of movement when these wines are introduced to the market.  Pioneer Series is primarily marketed to the supermarket segment within New Zealand.

  13. The Brands Offering a diversified portfolio of exciting brands, Shaky Bridge Wines creates wines consumers easily identify with and love to drink. Our brand impression is strong, creating lasting brand awareness and consumer loyalty. Devils Backbone Our Devils Backbone line includes a Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.  The branding for these exciting wines includes glow-in-the-dark label features and QR Code technology to allow our customers to interact with us using Smartphone's.  Priced slightly higher than the Pioneer Series wines in New Zealand the wines offer independent retailers a brand that does not compete with our grocery segment brand.  Our 2007 Devils Backbone Pinot Noir has received high acclaim from independent media sources within New Zealand and Australia.

  14. The People Our small but dedicated team brings decades of experience, insights, intellect and fun to our business. Our commitment to producing quality wines and providing outstanding customer service is second to none. David Grant, Winemaker Dave’s parents are pioneer winegrowers from Alexandra. Bill and Gill first planted grapes on the Home Block in 1973, many years before Central Otago was to establish itself as a premier region for Pinot Noir in the world. Dave attended Otago University and gained a degree in Mineral Technology in 1985. Following university, Dave travelled to Australia’s mines to put his education to good use. Dave returned to New Zealand during the 1990s, studied winemaking through EIT in Hawkes Bay and has had a controlling hand on the grape growing and winemaking for Shaky Bridge since the first vintage. Ashley Boeyen, Director of Marketing and Sales Ash joined Shaky Bridge in 2007 following a 14 year expatriate existence in the USA. Ash traveled to Illinois in 1994, studied Economics, Marketing and Business Finance at the Masters level at the University of Illinois and worked in all areas of the US wine industry during his time there. Also a graduate of Otago University (1988) Ash has been involved in the selling and marketing of wine for over 25 years. He studied wine through the Institute of Masters of Wine (London), created a wine education school in Illinois and has extensive experience building wine brands in new markets, creating food and wine matches and consulting to restaurants and retail accounts at all levels of the sales channel. Ash also has a Diploma of Wool Science from Massey University, though he remains unsure how to best use this qualification in the wine business. Dylan Turnbull, Viticulturalist Dylan has been a member of the Shaky Bridge team since 2004. A trained chef by profession, Dylan decided long days in the vineyard were better than long days in the kitchen. Dylan has the dubious enjoyment of protecting our vines from the late spring and autumn frosts though he does get to enjoy all the ‘big boys toys’ on the vineyard. Tractor work, quad bike spraying and other 4-wheel fun are all part of Dylan’s days. Incorporating sustainable practices in the vineyard, Dylan promotes soil health first as a means to producing quality grapes for use in Shaky Bridge Wines. Dylan recently worked a vintage in Burgundy and is currently obtaining his New Zealand Certificate of Viticulture.
