Two New Options in the M.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering

The department while still maintaining the traditional 30 credit MS degree in chemical engineering will launch two new options for the degree starting in the Fall 2008 semester.

The options are:

∙ Nanoengineering with Polymers

∙ Biochemical Engineering

Both options consist of four core courses, four elective courses and two courses emphasizing professional skills.

Details of the options are as follows:

Option 1 – Nanoengineering with Polymers

The study of nanoparticles is now one of the thrust areas in both engineering and science. This particular option enables one to see

the use of nanoparticles as building blocks to design, synthesize and fabricate biomedical and therapeutic devices. The option will

also present somebackground in polymer nanofibers and their production by electro spinning. In addition, the mechanical properties

of polymers based on nanostructure and morphology will be covered.

Option 2 – Biochemical Engineering

Biochemical engineering is a branch of chemical engineering that mainly deals with the design and construction of unit processes

that involve biological organisms of molecules. Applications of biochemical engineering are used in the food, feed, pharmaceutical,

biotechnology and water treatment industries. This option will include a study of bioreactors including bioreactor design.
