  2. Battle of Crecy - 1346 English defeat of French knights where English bowmen play a big role

  3. Battle of Poitiers - 1356 Once again the English bowmen defeat French knights The Black Prince captures French King Held for ransom for the equivalent of two years worth of France’s wealth French King will die in prison

  4. 1415 – Battle of Agincourt French knights defeated by English bowmen The end of feudal knights

  5. The English Long Bow – 105 pounds of pressure to pull it back 6 feet tall

  6. Joan of Arc Defeated English at Orleans May of 1429 Helped defeat English at Battle of Patay in July of 1429 Captured and handed over to England where they burn her at the stake

  7. Effects of Hundred Years’ War • Use of canon is used – will make castle and city walls obsolete • Knights – as used in fighting – is made obsolete by the English longbow • French nationalism increases

  8. Decline of the Church • Philip the Fair wanted to tax clergy • Pope refused and said he was supreme • Philip arrested him, the Pope escaped and the shock killed him • New Pope is French and took up residence in Avignon, France

  9. Papacy at Avignon (1305 – 1378)-Catholic Church loses prestige

  10. Great Schism 1378 - 1417 • Italian Pope elected • French Pope elected Both denounce each other as Anti-Christ • Lack of stability leads to decline of faith • Popes lose papal supremacy over secular leaders
