  2. Places and transportation • Geographical place names. Capitalize all letters in these except articles and prepositions. • Divisions of the world- Southern Hemisphere, Equator, etc. • Continents- Africa, North America, South America, etc. • Bodies of Water- Pacific Ocean, Mediterranean , Watts Bar Lake, Tennessee River

Islands- Bahamas, Easter Island, etc. • Mountains- Windrock, The Appalachians, Rocky Mouuntains • Other Landforms- The Gobi Desert, Falls Creek Falls • Regions- Latin America, Southeast Asia • Countries/Nations- United States of America, Italy, Mexico • States- Tennessee, North Carolina, California • Cities and towns- New York City, Oliver Springs, Knoxville

  4. Roads and Streets- Roane Street, Kingston Pike, Central Avenue • Bodies of the Universe- The Big Dipper, Pluto, North Star • Exception- Do not capitalize the sun and moon. Do not capitalize “earth” when it is preceded by “the.” Only capitalize Earth when you are referring to the planet.

  5. Regions and sections • Only capitalize north, south, east and west when they are referring to the sections of the country. • Do not capitalize them when they are referring to a direction. • Ex. – The South is known for its great hospitality and delicious food. • Go south on Highway 111.

  6. Buildings Bridges and Landmarks • Tower of London • Leaning Tower of Pisa • Golden Gate Bridge • Sydney Opera House • Tennessee Theater

  7. Planes, trains, other vehicles Trains-Amtrak, Orient Express • Planes-Air Force I, Concorde • Spacecraft- Challenger, Sputnik, Voyager II • Cars- Toyota, Mercedes, Chevrolet

  8. Practice • 1. My father-in-law came to this country on a famous ship, queen elizabeth II. • 2. We are planning a field trip to the smithsonian. • 3. The eiffel tower is an impressive structure that is known throughout the world. • 4.As we looked at the flight schedule, we noticed that delta had several delays due to the bad weather.I hope that our family can go diving when we visit the bahamas during spring break.
