  11. February 6, 2014 Focus Question: Write about yourself. What kinds of things do you like to do? What about your family? What do you want to do when you graduate? Learning Target: I can use proper writing techniques to share about myself.

  12. February 6, 2014 Learning Target: I will be able to write a thesis that states the most important example of symbolism in The Hunger Games.

  13. Say it Like You Mean It! A thesis is stating your idea as fact. It is the “hash tag” for your whole paper. In order to write an effective thesis: You must believe in your ideas. You must be brave and courageous. You must not be afraid to take risks. You must believe your voice matters.

  14. Good Theses…. State your point as a fact. State your claim and give reasons why. Direct the rest of your paper. Good Thesis: “The most important symbol in The Hunger Games is the “silent salute” because it represents the quiet yet strong longing and hope among the people for a leader who cares for others.”

  15. Poor Theses… Do not make a specific point. Emotionally based (“I believe.”) Do not explain your claim. Unable to guide the entire paper. Poor Thesis: “I believe the “silent salute is the most important symbol in The Hunger Games.”

  16. What is the most important symbol in the Hunger Games? Select one of the following symbols, and write a thesis arguing which symbol is the most important and why. Bread Dandelion Mockingjay Mockingjay Pin Peeta The Silent Salute The Woods Katniss’s Name
