  1. Benvenue Elementary Title I Parent Information Meeting Monday, October 3rd, 2011

  2. What is Title I? Title I is a FEDERAL program that provides money to schools based on the # of students that receive free or reduced lunch. This money can be used for a variety of school needs, but there are guidelines for spending.

Benvenue Elementary Title I Funding • We receive $216,736.77 • 133,424.28 is allocated for 3 teachers • 15,000 is allocated for tutors • 21,174.42 is allocated for staff development • 10,048.70 is allocated for instructional supplies • 6992.60 Is allocated for parent involvement • 21,656.61 Technology mobile labs • 3,000 Library Books • 1,500.00 At School Field Trip

  4. How Do We Use Title I Funds? • Personnel (Salary and Benefits) • Extra Teachers • Tutors • Instructional Supplies • Technology, calculators • EOG Preparation Materials • Parent Involvement • Agendas • Information Nights (EOG/Grade level, Bobcats in the Community)

  5. Important Items • The Title I budget is decided and approved by our school Leadership Team • A compliance notebook has to be compiled yearly to document that we are meeting the 10 components of Title I – this is aligned to our School Improvement Plan

  6. AYP – Adequate Yearly Progress • Set percentages that each student group has to meet in both reading and math • BES has 4 student groups: White, African American, Students with Disabilities (SWD) and Economically Disadvantaged Students (EDS). This creates 21 TARGET goals for Benvenue Elementary. • We also have to meet a set attendance percentage as one of our AYP goals – so your child’s attendance at school is IMPORTANT.

  7. AYP Results 2010-2011 • Benvenue Elementary met 19 out of 21 AYP goals for 2010-2011. • AYP is an all or nothing sanction – if you don’t meet the percentage with just one subgroup then you don’t meet AYP.

  8. Sanctions • Schools that do not meet AYP are under sanctions: • After the first year, they are placed on a “Watch List” • After 2 years of not meeting AYP, schools are classified as a “School of Improvement”. They must offer free tutoring (Supplemental Education Services) to qualifying students and a School Choice transfer option. • Cedar Grove Elementary and Swift Creek/Red Oak Elementary are designated as Schools of Choice for BES students.

  9. Sanctions…continued • Sanctions continue with increased requirements until the school has successfully met AYP in the subject area, in the targeted subgroup for two consecutive years • AYP Target Proficiency in Reading is 71.6% • AYP Target Proficiency in Math is 88.6% • If a Subgroup does not meet the target, it must show at least 10% growth (Safe Harbor)

  10. ABCs • The ABC accountability model is the state’s test accountability system- it measures whether each child made a certain percentage of growth • Formulas determine whether each child met or exceeded growth • Benvenue met expected growth this year – which means on average our students met the set amount of growth they should make in one academic year

What Can I Do As A Parent? • Stay informed… • Thursday folders • Progress Reports and Report Cards • Encourage good study habits… • Read nightly • Practice basic math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) • Encourage good attendance… • Be sure students are at school…missed days are very difficult to make up. We only have 180 days, and each one counts!
