  5. Thuggees • English word “thug”  “thuggee” • Organized bandits that roamed throughout / terrorized India for centuries • Murdered over 1,000,000 people between 1740 and 1830. • avg murders in America annually: 15,000.

  6. Indian Languages • Sanskrit: spoken by Hindus • Persian: (India was once controlled by the Persian Empire) • Arabic: spoken by Muslims • Common language?

  7. Thomas Macaulay • British politician who gave a famous speech “Macaulay’s Minute” • Advocated British Raj teaching Indians English ONLY to help “integrate” them.

  8. Macaulay’s Children • The “Anglicized” Indians who grew up speaking only English  disconnected from Indian culture. Carlton Banks (what does he “not get” that makes Will Smith upset?)
