    7. Reasons We Use Guides Help gain confidence when we assemble useful, appropriate supports & build a framework to operate Techniques & principles that can be depended on Gives clues to appropriate actions

    8. What Do You Think? Complete worksheet, Guides to Speech & Action: What Do You Think?

    9. Guide #1 State suggestions or directions in a positive rather than a negative form. OH: Positive Language Complete Worksheet

    10. Guide #2 Give a choice only when you are prepared to leave the choice up to the child. Choices are legitimate Increasing maturity = increasing choices Only offer a choice when you plan to follow through Offer 2 alternatives. Do you want to wear the red shirt or the blue shirt today? Example: 2 girls & lunch

    11. Guide #3 Use your voice as a teaching tool. Myth: Louder we speak, greater chance of controlling behavior FACT: Move closer to child & use a softer voice. (Key words: softer & closer) Article: Your voice can make or break a relationship Speak firmly, directly & slowly Watch tone of voice Negative Examples: yelling; shouting across playground; sing-song voice

    12. Guide #4 Avoid trying to change behavior by methods that may lead to loss of self respect. Step 1: eliminate destructive patterns: gestures, expression, tone of voice & words that convey shame Accept & respect child Help the child find success Example: Your first quiz scores

    13. Small Group Activity #1 Guides #2-4 (Do front side only) Stickers on Agree/Disagree worksheet Parrots Butterflies Toucan Frogs T/TH Only Yellow fish Red fish

    14. Guide #5 Avoid motivating a child by making comparisons between one child & another or encouraging competition. Competitiveness encourages quarreling Someone always loses Children need to feel acceptance whether they succeed or fail Example: Focus on personal improvement

    15. Guide #6 Redirect the child by suggesting an activity that is related to the childs purposes or interests whenever possible. Turn childs attention to an activity that has equal value as an interest or outlet Suggestion needs to relate to interest Example: Throwing

    16. Guide #7 Give a direction or suggestion at the time that it will be most effective. Timing of suggestion is as important as suggestion itself Giving advice too soon deprives child of working things out Intentionally give limited information to promote thought Think prevention! Example: Heading for trouble

    17. Small Group Activity #2 Guides #5-7 (back side)

    18. Guides to ACTION What we DO Read aloud your groups guide using the cardstock copy of your guide. Using your groups guides overhead, neatly print the THREE most important points classmates should know about your guide.
