  2. The Viking Age • The Vikings originated in Scandinavia. • The Scandinavian countries were Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. • The name Viking comes from the word Vikingr, which meant “pirate”. • The Vikings raided and conquered countries throughout Europe.

  3. The Viking Countries • Scandinavia is located in northern Europe. • These countries had poor, rocky soil. • During the eighth century the population grew and the land could no longer support the people.

  5. Viking Family • Many Viking families slept in the middle of the long house with the chieftain as the boss. • Many Viking families ate in the middle of the long house. • Viking families lived near cool water springs.

  6. Viking Female-Warriors • There were not just male Vikings. • Women have not been thought to be involved in men’s activities, however, women have been involved. • They have participated in Viking raids in Europe.

  7. Viking Men • The Viking men were usually in raids. • The Viking men had names that meant what they could do. • Viking men were sometimes called berserkers because they were fierce warriors.

  8. Viking Berserkers • Berserkers ate poisonous mushrooms that made them crazy. • They struck fear into their enemies’ hearts. • When they would come to an island they would dress in bears’ skin to frighten their enemies.

  9. Viking Raids • The Vikings raided France, England, Ireland, Iceland, and Russia. • When they raided they would rip out their enemies’ lungs after they stabbed them. • The word ‘raid’ meant to go to a place and steal peoples’ goods and conquer them.

  10. Viking Sagas • The Viking Saga tells of heroic deeds in their time. • The Saga tells people of the old time.

  11. Viking Burials • Viking burials were a very depressing day. • Viking believed that if a warrior were to die in battle they would have a wonderful afterlife. • If they were to die in bed they would have a terrible, very terrible afterlife.

  12. Viking Ship The Viking ship was used for war between other counties or for cargo. The cargo ship was called the Knarr and the warship was called the Drakkar. The Drakkar was used for raids throughout Europe. The Knarr was used for carrying cargo. *

  13. History of the Drakkar The Drakkar was a warship for battle. The Drakkar had a ornamental piece on the front of the ship such as a dragon. The Drakkar carried Viking warriors into battle or raids to get goods. *

  14. The History of the Knarr The Knarr was used for carrying cargo and animals over long distances. It was well built for ocean travel because it was shorter and it was a better ship for rough seas. Rowing was done near the bow or the stern.

  15. $ The Hoard $ • Vikings would usually hoard anything expensive. • They would also hoard things that they got from raids. • “Hoard” meant to steal things and hide them.

  16. The Thing • The thing occurred when Vikings get-together for a trial by ordeal. • If done wrong, you shall be punished.
