Enhancement of Research Infrastructure in U.S. Dental Schools
The Issue • In FY 2001, only four of the 55 U.S. dental schools received over $6 million in support from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). • Eight dental institutions received less than $500,000 and 13 did not get any support from the NIDCR.
Addressing the Issue • NIDCR launched two new initiatives to enhance the capacity of U.S. dental schools for conducting basic, behavioral and clinical research
GOAL:To establish a broader base of dental school institutions that have a critical mass of research as an integral component of their educational missions Curriculum Development Programs (R25) Research Infrastructure Programs (R24, U24)
Dental Schools Research Infrastructure Programs • Research Infrastructure and Capacity Building for Minority Dental Institutions to Reduce Oral Health Disparities (U24 grants) • Improvement of Research Infrastructure in U.S. Dental Schools (R24 Planning Awards, U24 Implementation Awards)
Developing and Implementing an Enhanced Research Infrastructurethrough the U24 Award • Enhance ability of U.S. dental schools to • conduct cutting edge research by: • Creating a critical mass of researchers in a • pre-selected area(s) • Improving the research support infrastructure, • including personnel and equipment
Cooperative Agreement Mechanism (U24) • Cooperative agreement mechanism (U24) to be used for implementation phase • NIDCR staff actively involved with institutions in conducting awards • Planning and assessment; develop and facilitate collaborations; establish time lines; organize annual meeting; assist in data analyses, evaluation and dissemination of information
Oral Health Research Curriculum Development Programs • To infuse an appreciation of science and the results of scientific research in the dental school curriculum • To strengthen the research component of dental education and to enhance the application of basic and clinical research findings to clinical training
Oral Health Research Curriculum Development Programs (continued) • To facilitate interactionof researchers with dental students and postgraduate advanced specialty trainees • Prepare future practitioners and potential researchers in areas of high priority • Current NIDCR emphasis on research design, clinical research, adoption of research outcomes; and • Application of genetics to dental practice and oral health care
Encourage Students and Faculty to: Participate in broadly defined scholarly activity Monitor the latest science Develop an appreciation for research • Increase likelihood they will pursue: • Academic Careers • Advanced Degrees • Research Training
