  3. Nasal Finals The nasal finals comprise one vowel followed by the nasal consonants –nor–ng. an like 'an' in 'can' en like 'en' in 'client' in like 'in' in 'pin' un like 'wen' in 'Wendy' The front nasal finals comprise one vowel followed by the alveolar nasal –n.

Nasal Finals ang a Mandarin 'a' followed by the 'ng' sound like in 'sing' eng a Mandarin 'e' followed by the 'ng' sound like in 'sing' ing like 'ing' in 'sing' ong a Mandarin 'o' followed by the 'ng' sound like in 'sing' The back nasal finals comprise one vowel followed by the alveolar nasal –ng.

  8. Change of tone The tone of a word sometimes changes when used in a sentence depending on the tone of the word that proceeding or comes after it. Rule 1: If a 3rd tone is followed by a 3rd tone, the first 3rd tone becomes second tone. yǒuhǎo 友好(friendly) liǎojiě 了解(understand) gǔlǎo 古老(old) yǔfǎ 语法(grammar)

  13. y, w, yu When finals 'i', 'u' and 'ü' make syllables themselves without preceding, they are written as follows: i = y u = w ü = yu e.g.: yān / wū

  14. er er like 'er' in 'sister' The final of a syllable may combine with “er” to form a syllable with a retroflex ending. In Chinese, there are many words with such endings and we use “r” for the transcription. e.g.: gē 歌(song)——gēr歌儿(song) huà 画(picture)——huàr画儿(picture)
