  2. Title We think it will be about people fighting against AIDS and in memory of the people who fought against AIDS.

  3. Paraphrase Stanza 1: Africa is tired from fighting against AIDS. 2:Traditional cures versus modern medicine. 3:People care about finding a cure for AIDS. 4:They are trying to go back to their life before AIDS.

  4. Connotation Simile: “we have washed up on a word / like an old bed sheet”. It means they are sick and tired. Repetition: “the old world the new world/ the new world the old world”. It shows the traditions have changed. Assonance: “here among the grand things/that have curled around us/and sprouted wings”. They both have the “ings” sound.

  5. Connotation Oxymoron: “to make everything /out of nothing again”. Everything and nothing are opposites. Neoliberalism: transferring control of the economy from public to private to produce a more efficient government of health.

  6. Attitude The speaker’s attitude is tired but hopeful. The poet is raising awareness and hoping for change.

  7. Shifts The first stanza is about the harmful conditions in Africa. Towards the end it shows that there is still hope for a cure.

  8. Title Fanon’s land is a place in Africa where a lot of people have died from AIDS.

  9. Theme Even when everything is lost, there is always still hope. Even when they were tired, they still fought against AIDS.
