Summary • ChoicePoint, a georgia based corporation, provides risk management and fraud prevention data • In fall 2004, Choicepoint was victim of fraudulent spoofing attack in which unauthorized individuals posed as a legitimate customers and obtained personal data on more than 145,000 individuals • Criminals accessed social security numbers/driver license numbers, and abbreviated credit reports

  3. Summary • ChoicePoint became aware of problem and contacted LAPD • Choicepoint exposed itself a public relations nightmare, considerale expense, a class-action lawsuit, a Senate investigation , and a 20 percent drop in its share price

  4. Question 1 • Comment on the ethical issues and ChoicePoint’s response. Did ChoicePoint choose wisely?

  5. Answer • Even though it dropped in a 20 percent share price, they rebounded with a hotline for customers who were comprimsed to call for assistance • They purchased a credit report for these people and paid for a 1 year credit report

  6. Question 2 • Given ChoicePoint’s experience, what is the likely action of similar companies whose records are compromised in this way? Given your answer, do you think federal regulations and additional laws are required? What other steps could be taken to ensure that data vendors notify people harmed by data theft?

Answer • Government related jobs should be the first to use ChoicePoint in being able to verify which candidates might have lied on their applications about possible fraud cases. • Also insurance companies or banks might want to use ChoicePoint before granting loans because they will be able to obtain information on credit history, social security verification, education verification, and the drug testing policy. • The central theme of ChoicePoint would be to make sure the right candidate is hired for the job at hand.
