  3. Ground Rules • Books for each class are handed out in the classroom • Attendance! • Parking permits • Breaks – you decide • Food/Drinks • Cell phones • Syllabus/Assignments • Lectures/Classroom activities

  4. Meet and Greet Time • Complete Name • Preferred Name • Where do you work? • How long have you been there? • Why did you choose MOC? • What would you do if you won the lottery? • Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

  6. New Beginnings • Read pages 1 – 3 • Choose 1 question from the Assessing Your Strengths block and write a paragraph- pg. 3 • Must be at least 5 sentences • Make sure your name is on the paper • Will be handed in

Get to Know One Another • Group Assignment • Split into groups • Pick a recorder for your group • Take 10 minutes to complete this assignment • Generate a list of 25 things your group has in common • Be Creative • Make sure your list has some less obvious characteristics (You all drive a white car, you’ve all been to Disney World, You all have 2 children, etc.)

  14. St. Martin’s Handbook • Scan pages 1 – 12 • Overview of top 20 most common errors • Great resource to review • Great examples for each error • Rules do change • Always remember who your reader is going to be: your audience

  15. Paragraphs • What is a paragraph? • Central component of a paper • Definition: a group of sentences that forms a unit; it is the unity and coherence of ideas among those sentences that makes a paragraph a paragraph.

Paragraph (Continued) • Every paragraph in a paper should be: • Unified – sentences should all refer to the main idea or thesis of the paper. • Coherent – sentences should be arranged in a logical manner and should follow a definite plan for development. • Well-developed – every idea discussed in the paragraph should be adequately explained and supported through evidence and details that work together to explain the paper’s controlling idea.

Homework: • Complete your readings • Complete page 15 in the New Beginnings (NB) book • Complete exercise 2.1 (pages 26-27) in the St. Martin’s Handbook (SMH) • Complete exercise 7.2 (page 114) in the SMH • Writing assignment – choose a topic from exercise 5.2 on pages 62 -63 in the SMH • Must be a 5 paragraph essay
