  1. Turkey Guts WillMove Our Butts

  2. What You’ll Learn • Thermal Conversion Process (TCP) vs. Fossil Fuel Petroleum: • Similarities • Differences • Pros • Cons

  3. What You’ll Learn • Location of TCP Facilities • Changing World Technologies • Where to find more information • How Turkey Guts Will Move Our Butts

  4. Guts Will Do What? • Turkey guts can become biodiesel fuel: • Heating oil • Diesel fuel • Gasoline

  5. What is Biodiesel? • Biomass is plant-derived materials. • Biodiesel is fuel from plant-derived materials: • Corn • Wood • Vegetable oil • Turkey guts?

  6. How? • Thermal Depolymerization Process (TDP) • Thermochemical Conversion (TCC) • Thermal Conversion Process (TCP) • Definition

  7. Guts = Fuel? • Changing World Technologies • The Carthage, MO plant can grind up, heat, pressurize and process leftover turkey innards, bones, feathers, fats, and grease. 200 tons of turkey offal= 600 barrels of oil Daily!

  8. Turkey Guts? Really? • Yes, turkey guts. Also: • Plastics • Tires • Medical waste • Hog manure • Poisons • Prions (like Mad-Cow disease)

  9. Where is This? • Carthage, Missouri. • Commercial-scale • Next door to a ConAgra Butterball facility • Philadelphia Naval Business Center, Pennsylvania • Pilot plant

  10. Map It! • Carthage, MO – Commercial plant

  11. How Does TCP Work? • TCP copies the geological and geothermal processes of nature … like petroleum oil.

  12. How Does TCP Work? • But TCP is faster using the same 6 steps.

  13. TCP = Petroleum Oil? • TCP isn’t exactly the same as fossil fuel, but similarities exist: • TCP heavy crude oil #4 is refined in traditional oil refineries. • TCP oil is produced in the same manner as petroleum oil – only more quickly. • TCP oil can be used in anything that petroleum oil is used for.

  14. Why is TCP Great? • Reduces landfill waste • Renewable energy source • By-products are harmless, even useful: • Water • Hydrocarbon oils • Fatty acid oils • Gas • Solid/carbon • Solid/minerals

  15. How About Petroleum? • Readily available • Ubiquitous uses: • Gasoline • Heating oil • Plastics • Building materials • Paints • Fabrics

  16. What’s the Catch? • TCP Cons: • Only 88% efficient. • Difficult to initiate commercial-scale process. • Petroleum Cons: • Foreign dependency. • Limited supply.

  17. More Pros & Cons! • Instructions: Form groups of 2-3 people and in less than 10 minutes come up with at least 1 more pro and con for each of the oil technologies. Prepare to share your answers with the group. • TCP Pros? Cons? • Petroleum Pros? Cons?

  18. What Else? What else does Biodiesel contribute? • Did you know Diesel cars can be “modded” to run on vegetable oil? • Google Search: “biodiesel conversion kit” • Greasel • Ecology Center

  19. What I Can Do! • Instructions: Take 10 minutes to write down 3 examples of how you currently use fossil fuel petroleum and how you could substitute TCP-derived oil in its place. Be prepared to share one example with the group. • Feel free to be creative and to list answers not already mentioned!

  20. What Else Can I Do? Everything you do has an impact! • Strong supporters can: • Convert their cars to biodiesel consumption. • Write to their congressmen in support of alternative energy initiatives. • Participate in “grassroots” efforts to promote renewable energy resources and education.

  21. What Else Can I Do? Everything you do has an impact! • Everyday people can: • Recycle and use renewable energy sources whenever possible. • Support “green” or alternative-energy corporations. • Google Search: “green energy corporation” or “renewable energy corporation” • Visit http://PowerPlus.com for more information!

  22. Thank You! • Visit http://PowerPlus.com • Sign-up to win an alternative energy poster signed by Cameron Diaz and Gwyneth Paltrow! • Sign-up for the monthly e-newsletter: • Be automatically submitted to win a monthly prize! • Keep up-to-date with new energy alternatives. • Be informed of local activities and events. • Get involved with saving the world!
