  2. The CPU • The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is responsible for interpreting and executing most of the commands from the computer's hardware  and software.

  3. The motherboard • The motherboard serves to connect all of the parts of a computer together. The , CPU, memory, hard drives, optical drives, video card, sound card, and other ports and expansion cards all connect to the motherboard directly or via cables.

  4. RAM • RAM is an acronym for random access memory a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly; that is, any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes. RAM is the most common type of memory found in computers and other devices such as printers.

  5. Power Supply Unit • A power supply is a device that supplies electric power to an electrical load. The term is most commonly applied to electric power converters that convert one form of electrical energy to another, though it may also refer to devices that convert another form of energy to electrical energy.

  6. Fan • A computer fan is any fan inside, or attached to a computercase used for active cooling and may refer to fans that draw cooler air into the case from the outside, expel warm air from inside, or move air across a heat sink to cool a particular component.

  7. Sound card • A device that can be slotted into a computer to allow the use of audio components for multimedia applications.

  8. Modem • A combined device for modulation and demodulation, for example, between the digital data of a computer and the analog signal of a telephone line.

  9. Floppy drive • A floppy disk, or diskette, is a disk storage medium composed of a disk of thin and flexible magnetic storage medium, sealed in a rectangular plastic carrier lined with fabric that removes dust particles.

  10. Hard drive • A high-capacity, self-contained storage device containing a read-write mechanism plus one or more hard disks, inside a sealed unit. Also called hard disk drive.

  11. CD ROM • A compact disc used as a read-only optical memory device for a computer system.
