  4. GISIG THEMATIC NETWORKS • Thematic Networks are promoted in order to create frameworks of common interest among the GISIG members and to establish linkages and partnership with various GIS applications domains, users groups and professional operators. • The following networks have been already started: • ICAM-GISGIS for Integrated Coastal Area Management, jointly promoted by ICCOPS and GISIG • NATURE-GIS GIS for protected areas and nature conservation • WATER-GISGIS for Water Environment, including also the Techware activity line

  6. INSPIRE SDIC • Spatial Data Interest Community • The process of developingINSPIRE Implementing Rulesis approached as a network ofSpatial Data Interest Communities (SDIC), in order to assure and promote in the process the participation of stakeholders. • The SDICs are divided by: • Region • Societal sector • Thematic issue • INSPIRE Data themes (or Thematic issues) are listed in the Annexes I-II-III to the INSPIRE Proposal for Directive (different timetable for implementation). • Stakeholders form specific Spatial Data Interest Communities (SDIC) through their common interest on one or more of the aspects of interest drive the demand for spatial data and information services.

  7. Thematic INSPIRE SDICs… • In the framework of INSPIRE, GISIG has promoted two thematic SDICs: • GI-CLAN: Geo-Information Community in Coastal LANdscape • - NATURE-GIS: Geo-Information in Protected Areas and Nature Conservation

  18. The ECO-GEOWATER VPC www.gisig.it/eco-geowater

  19. TRANSCAT Integrated Water Management of TRANSboundary CATchments FP 5 EESD Programme TRANSCAT main goal is the creation of a Decision Support System (DSS) for optimal water management of transboundary catchments, in context of the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive. It deals on one side with problems and methodological issues typical of transboundary catchment environment and on the other side with best practices and problems in designing and implementing a system for supporting decisions in trans-national river basins. GISIG co-ordinated the preparation of the TRANSCAT Compendium

  20. INSPIRE Directive (2007/2/EC) Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) New Groundwater Directive (2006/118/EC) Flood Directive (formal adoption expected at the end of 2007) WATER-GIS/TECHWARE interest group • WATER-GIS/TECHWARE intends to support the synergistic implementation of EU water directives at Member States level through the participation in research activities as well as a properly addressed information to stakeholders in the field, with particular attention to innovation technologies and GIS. • In summary, the activities that the WATER-GIS/TECHWARE network intends to promote are: • information and awareness to stakeholders (e.g. through conferences) • training and education activities • staff mobility actions • user needs analysis • submission of research projects on GIS for IWRM • enhancing the linkage between INSPIRE and WFD

  21. WATER-GIS/TECHWARE SIG Action Plan • VESTA-GIS - Vocational Education and Sectoral Training network on GIS & GI Application domains (Lifelong Learning Programme, Leonardo Da Vinci Network) • Possible link with EIONET - EEA (European Topic Centre on Water) also in the framework of the launch of SEIS (Shared Environmental Information System) • TRANSCAT Compendium (outcome of TRANSCAT project) containing material to develop training modules on water management and Decision Support Systems development • Link with EUROAQUAE - Euro Hydroinformatics and Water Management (participated by the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis) • Contacts with WSSTP - Water Supply and Sanitation Technology Platform (participated by IRIDE ACQUA GAS)

  22. WSSTP -Water Supply and Sanitation Technology Platform The Water Supply and Sanitation Technology Platform (WSSTP) is one of the technology platforms that are set up within the European Environmental Technology Action Plan (ETAP) that was adopted by the European Commission in 2004. It has been established as new instrument for the EU FP7; it is open to all stakeholders (private and public) and provides them an opportunity to define common strategic research agenda sharing activities and thus increasing investments in European technolgy development. The WSSTP objectives are: • the competitiveness of the European water industry (Lisbon Strategy) • solving the European water problems • reaching the Millennium Development Goals (Johannesburg)

  23. HUMBOLDT (GMES project) Development of a Framework for Data Harmonisation and Service Integration Objective HUMBOLDT will contribute to the implementation of a European Spatial Data Infrastructure (ESDI) that integrates the diversity of spatial data available from the multitude of European organizations. To achieve this objective and to maximise the benefits gained from this integration, the requirements of INSPIRE, of GMES, of the environmental agencies and of other related activities in the EU will be met.

  42. Iniatives within eContent+ Project GIS4EU Programme eContent+ Full name Provision of interoperable datasets to open GI to the EU communities Duration 30 months (from October 2007) The problem Lack of harmonisation between geo-datasets at different scales, fragmentized datasets and sources, gaps in availability, duplication of information collection. Project aim GIS4EU aims to provide base datasets and to ensure cross -scale, -language and -border interoperability/accessibility according to INSPIRE. Its way is common data model, harmonization, aggregation & data exposition rules and guidelines enabling access to data by different countries and levels (national, regional and local), with no need of central database(s) and service(s).

  45. THE SEVENTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME (2007 – 2013) The framework programme (FP) is the European Union’s main instrument for funding research and development. FPs have been implemented since 1984 and cover a period of five years. It has been proposed for FP7, however, to run for seven years since January 2007.

  46. THE FOUR PROGRAMMES OF THE 7FP The proposed 7FP will be organised in four programmes corresponding to four basic components of European research: • Cooperation: supporting research activities in trans-national cooperation (also between EU and Third Countries) • Ideas: enhancing dynamism, creativity and excellence of EU research • People: strengthening the human potential in research and technology (e.g. Marie Curie Actions) • Capacity: supporting research infrastructures, research for the benefit of SMEs research potential of European Regions (Regions of Knowledge) as well as stimulating the realisation of the full research potential of the enlarged Union

  47. THE NINE THEMES OF THE 7FP The themesidentified for this programme correspond to major fields in the progress of economic, environmental and industrial challenges. It presents strong elements of continuity with its predecessor the 6FP. They are: Health Food, agriculture and biotechnology Information and communication technology Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies Energy Environment and climate change Transport and Aeronautics Socio-economics sciences and the humanities Space and Security Research

  48. 3. INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY • Objective: • Improve the competitiveness of European industry and enable Europe to master and shape the futuredevelopments of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). • Application research: • ICT meeting societal challenges: new systems, novel materials, structures and technologies, and services in areas of public interest improving quality, efficiency, access and inclusiveness; user friendly applications, integration of new technologies and initiatives such as ambient assisting living. • ICT for content, creativity and personal development. • ICT supporting business and industry • ICT for trust and confidence
