  1. Materials World Network: Study at the Nanoscale of Photovoltaic Materials Ana L. Moore, Arizona State University, DMR 0908656 • •Dyes for sensitizing inorganic semiconductors have been designed and synthesized. The design features careful attention to both optical and redox properties. Fig. A • Highly monodispersed TiO2nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized in the water pool of reverse micelles. Preliminary TEM results show high crystallinity. Fig. B • These TiO2 NPs were successfully sensitized with perylene and tetrapyrrole derivatives. Fluorescence of the bound perylene dye fraction is highly quenched indicating excited state deactivation by photo-induced electron transfer from the dye to the TiO2. Fluorescence anisotropy clearly shows that in micelles containing TiO2 NPs, perylene dye movement is restricted. Fig. C • These model systems are being studied at the single NP level using spectro-electrochemical techniques to investigate the effect of the modulation of the NP Fermi level on the photo-induced electron injection efficiency. A novel SMS-EC cell was constructed that allows flow and oxygen concentration control for improved electrochemical measurements. Fig. D A B polar-head non-polar tail C D TiO2

  2. Meeting in Argentina of Groups from Four Countries Ana L. Moore, Arizona State University, DMR 0908656 On May 15–20, 2011, the second annual meeting of the group took place in Mendoza, Argentina. The activities began with a workshop, where Professors Rodrigo Palacios (Argentina) and Ernesto Mariño-Ochoa (México) described the accomplishments of the collaborative research. After the workshop, a meeting was held to exchange information concerning the latest research developments and plans for the future. On May 17, the 21st conference of the “Inter-American Photochemical Society” (I-APS) commenced. Each of the students presented posters on the work supported by the “Materials World Network” grant. It was a great opportunity for them to interact with a large number of photochemists (over 300 participants) from the Americas and Europe. Laura Hernández (Argentina) and Robert Godin (Canada) at McGill, doing single spectro-electrochemical measurements at the nanoparticle level with preparations developed in Argentina and compounds prepared in the US and México.
