Memo Memo – a) a short note designating something to be remembered, esp. something to be done or acted upon in the future; reminder. b) an informal message, esp. one sent between two or more employees of the same company, concerning company business Memos are sent to people within your organization. Letters are sent to people outside your organization.

  3. Memo • The tone of a memo is generally friendly (but somewhat-formal), because it is a communication between colleagues. • Keep the memo concise and to the point. Memos are usually no longer than 2 pages, and contain only writing. • Use bullet points to explain the most important steps in a process. • Use a short thank you to finish the memo.

TO: Kelly Anderson, Marketing Executive FROM: Jonathon Fitzgerald, Market Research Assistant DATE: June 14, 2007 RE: Fall Clothes Line Promotion Through market research and analysis, it has been discovered that the proposed advertising media for the new fall lines need to be reprioritized and changed. Findings from focus groups and surveys have made it apparent that we need to update our advertising efforts to align them with the styles and trends of young adults today. No longer are young adults interested in sitcoms as they watch reality televisions shows. Also, it is has become increasingly important to use the internet as a tool to communicate with our target audience to show our dominance in the clothing industry. Internet Advertising XYZ Company needs to focus advertising on internet sites that appeal to young people. According to surveys, 72% of our target market uses the internet for five hours or more per week. The following list shows in order of popularity the most frequented sites: • Google • Facebook • Myspace • EBay (…the memo continues)

Report Report – an account or statement describing in detail an event, situation, or the like, usually as the result of observation, inquiry, etc. • Reports come in various lengths – from short (2-3 pages) 10 to long (hundreds of pages). Some contain charts/diagrams/etc. • You can report on just about anything (as long as there is an audience). • Reports are formal in tone. This provides many opportunities for creativity!

  7. A report should have the following parts: • Title Page • Abstract (short summary) • Introduction/Description • [Charts/Tables] • Conclusions and Recommendations
