HIV/AIDS in KwaZulu-Natal • One of the highest HIV infection rates in the world : about 36% of adults are infected • Majority of the population living in extreme poverty • Government policy is a decade behind – advocate garlic and olive oil rather than anti-retroviral drugs
What HACT is Doing about it Nursing and Home Based Care • 53 volunteers from the community care for sick patients in their community • Rudimental primary care training • Supervised by 5 nurses • Home-based carers each look after 5-15 patients • Receive monthly food parcel from HACT • WERE receiving R500 ($100) stipend from Department of Health, but this has been discontinued
What HACT is Doing About It • Nutritional assistance • 37 families supported by emergency feeding program • Weekly food packages • Horticulture project • Assist families to grow vegetables, providing resources such as seeds, fencing and training;
School Fee Fund • 109 children who otherwise couldn’t afford it were sent to school this year • Funeral Fund • Assist families who cannot afford a funeral for their departed. • Education and workshops • Go to schools, workplaces, to educate about HIV & AIDS • Voluntary Counseling & Testing (VCT)
Income GenerationWoza Moya – “Come Change” • Currently providing an income for 89 women and men affected by HIV/AIDS and their families Nokothula’s Bauble Necklaces
What YOUcan do • “Little Travellers” are made by women as part of a Woza Moyaincome-generation scheme • We are selling them for a donation of $5.
