  1. Essay Review Go lakers Go Lakers Go Lakers!

  2. Review of Jane Schaeffer Model • 5 paragraph model: introduction, 3 body paragraphs, conclusion • Introduction: Hook, state author and title, and THESIS STATEMENT • Body Paragraphs: topic sentence, concrete detail lead in, concrete detail (QUOTE), commentary. • Conclusion: restate thesis, make real world connection • ***Make sure you have two chunk paragraphs!!!***

  3. Thesis Statements • Goes at end of introduction paragraph • Restates question • Lists what each of your body paragraphs will be about • Ex: What is your favorite food? • My favorite food is pizza because it tastes delicious, you can put lots of toppings on it, and it can be healthy.

  4. Topic Sentence • Mini thesis statement: simply tells what the paragraph is going to be about • EX: (BAD) One topping you can put on pizza is jalapenos. (GOOD) Pizza is amazing because you can put lots of different toppings, such as jalapenos, pickles, pepperoni, and mushrooms.

  5. Low Scores • Summarizing! All the teachers have already read the story; we don’t need you to re-tell it to us! • Easiest way to avoid summarizing is to use quotes! • Not having a thesis statement or topic sentences • Not finishing (have all 5 paragraphs, even if they are not the best) • Only 1 chunk paragraphs

  6. Sample • Prompt: Who is responsible for the tragedy in Macbeth? • You can either pick 3 characters and write one paragraph on each character OR Pick one character and discuss 3 traits

  7. MAKE AN OUTLINE Thesis: The three characters responsible for the tragedy in Macbeth are Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and King Duncan. Macbeth is responsible because he kills many characters and is super paranoid Quote #1 Quote #2 Lady Macbeth is responsible because she convinces Macbeth to kill Duncan, and she helps him cover up his crimes Quote #1 Quote #2 King Duncan is responsible because he promotes Macbeth, and is too trusting Quote #1 Quote #2

  8. MAKE AN OUTLINE Thesis: Macbeth is responsible for the tragedy in Macbeth because he is ambitious, paranoid, and easily manipulated Macbeth is too ambitious because he wants to be King and he doesn’t want anyone to threaten his power Quote #1 Quote #2 Macbeth is paranoid because he doesn’t trust anyone and kills off all his allies who he thinks might threaten him Quote #1 Quote #2 Macbeth is easily manipulated by both Lady Macbeth and the 3 witches Quote #1 Quote #2

  9. Make Sure You… • Don’t summarize! • Have 2 chunk paragraphs! • Finish all 5 paragraphs • Have a thesis statement and topic sentences!

  10. 3 day outline • Tuesday: read the story and create an outline • Wednesday: write out your rough draft • Thursday: re-write rough draft with any editing for your final draft
