  2. The Question Did the condensed 2011-2012 season cause more injuries? Ho: The condensed season did not cause a greater number of injuries. Ha: The condensed season caused a greater number of injuries.

  3. Background Info The 2011-2012 season was delayed until Christmas day 2011 due to the NBA lockout. The lockout was caused by disagreements between the players and the owners over the proposed reduction of the players share of Basketball related Income. The season was shortened to 66 games instead of 82. However, after Christmas teams usually only play 54 games instead they played an extra 12 games.

  4. The Data We gathered our data from Fox Sports and a team rankings blog. We then categorized the data by year and then recorded the number of injuries in the first 40 games of each season.

  5. The Data Random: The data is random because we decided to only look at the first 40 games of each season Normal: N≥10n Independent: The data is independent because one person’s injury is not affected by another’s

  6. Analysis p=.0504 At the 5% significance level our data was not significant however it was extremely close.

  7. Inference We performed a one sample Z test. We performed this by calculating an average number of injuries per season and a standard deviation. Then we calculated a Z-score by using the formula:

  8. Conclusion We fail to reject the null hypothesis, meaning there is not reason to believe that the condensed season caused more injuries. We were limited by the amount of available data for any given season. If we did this again we would chose a sport with more recorded data in order to improve accuracy of the test.
