  2. Public Sector Marketplace • The Federal government purchases nearly $200 billion in goods and services • WBE Goal: Not less than 5% awarded to women owned businesses • WBEs secured $4.6 billion in fed. prime contracts

  3. Public Sector Marketplace • Federal Government Purchasing Goals: • Small - 23% • SDB - 5% • Women Owned - 5% • Service Disabled Vet - 3% • HubZone - 2.5%

Private Sector Marketplace • Major corporations, as well as medium-to-small corporations, often inherit diversity purchasing goals from government agencies with whom they do business • Some major corporations also strive to do business with their typical customer which is often women and minorities (i.e., Sears, Ford).

  5. Federal Certifications • SBA 8(a) Certification Program • Small Disadvantage Business (SDB) Certification • HUBZone Certification • Women Owned Business (WOB) - Self Certify

Federal Certifications SBA offers the following certifications: • 8a • Benefits: sole source contracts, additional contracting support programs, also receive SDB • Criteria: Socially and economically disadvantaged, 2 years in business, direct ownership of company, U.S. citizen, personal net worth below $250K • SDB • Benefits: 10% price preference on certain contracts • Criteria: Socially and economically disadvantaged, direct ownership of company, U.S. citizen, personal net worth below $750K

  7. Federal Certifications SBA offers the following certifications: • HubZone • Benefits: sole source contracts, 10% price preference on certain contracts • Criteria: Business is located in a HubZone and at least 35% of employees live in a HubZone, U.S. citizen

  8. Certification in Illinois GOVERNMENT AGENCIES: • City of Chicago (DBE, MBE, WBE) • Cook County (MBE, WBE) • State of IL (MBE, PBE, FBE) • Chicago Transit Authority (DBE) • Illinois Department of Transportation (DBE) • METRA (DBE) • PACE (DBE)

  9. Certification in Illinois NON-GOVERNMENTAL, THIRD PARTY CERTIFICATIONS: • Women’s Business Development Center (WBE) • Chicago Minority Business Development Council (MBE)

Certification in Illinois Benefits of WBDC and CMBDC: • + National Recognition by Corporate America • + Accepted by State of IL, City of Chicago, Chicago Park District, Chicago Housing Authority, City Colleges, City of Evanston, Village of Oak Park, Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, • + Provides assistance to help utilize certification • + Typically faster, more user-friendly process • - Annual Fee
