  1. EDITORIAL | VERTICA@SURFACES.IN “THOSE WE LOVE DON’T GO AWAY, THEY WALK BESIDE US EVERYDAY; UNSEEN, UNHEARD, BUT ALWAYS NEAR, STILL LOVED, STILL MISSED, AND VERY DEAR!” Photo: Piero Mancheni Product displayed: Natuzzi leather sofa, Milan Ahh! June 2015 witnessed the loss of 3 prominent figures, the legendary Ar. Charles Correa (1 September 1930 – 16 June 2015); the free spirited Ar. Hema Sankalia (1934 - 2 June 2015) and one of the foremost self-taught artists of India, Nek Chand Saini (December 1924 - 12 June 2015) who designed the iconic Rock Garden of Chandigarh. Surfaces Reporter bows in tribute to them! Special thanks to Ruturaj Parikh, Director, Charles Correa Foundation, for sharing insightful details about what made working with Ar. Correa so intimidating & special. Paying homage to Ar. Hema Sankalia’s contribution to Architecture, Surfaces Reporter is proud to announce a special issue on ‘Women Architects of India,’ to be released soon. It is common to find Architects sharing their projects and ideas. However, young architects and industry as a whole will get to learn more when other aspects of design are discussed as well. For instance, the home and work areas of artists like Antoni Gaudi were actual material laboratories. Whatever inspiration he used to draw from nature and life, were translated to design elements that could be used in various parts of building. Beyond the commercial world of brands & products, lies a world of materials which need insightful designers to touch, imagine and create. Surfaces Reporter is thankful to Ar. Reza Kabulwho has complied with our special request for sharing the materials of his choice, illustrating with projects where he has used them in ways that makes them special to the context of the buildings. In this edition of Surfaces Reporter, we have touched upon a material which has the potential to change the way our building facades look - Exterior Grade High Pressure Laminate. Check the heart beat of this material in Surfaces Reporter’s Material Meter. Don’t miss the Rising Star’s of this month, and do check the special 20 lighting designspicked from Milan Design Week. Thanking you for the amazing feedback for the June issue! Keep reading Surfaces Reporter magazine! JULY 2015 SURFACES REPORTER 6
