  2. Daytona • Daytona Beach started hosting land speed records • 8 consecutive records • Daytona became known for fast cars • 1.5 and 2 mile courses were created for drivers

  3. Prohibition • In 1920 Washington passed a law prohibiting the sale of alcohol • Brewers began selling under the table • 1933 the law was lifted and the sale of alcohol become legal again

  4. Bootlegging • After prohibition laws were passed, brewers needed a way to distribute their product • Drivers were found and cars were modified • Cars were lightened • Engines were enhanced for speed

  5. After Prohibition • After the repeal of prohibition moonshiners still needed transportation • Drivers started racing each other

  6. NASCAR is Born • National Association for Stock Car Racing created in 1947 • 1st race- February 1948 Daytona

  7. The King, Richard Petty • Born July 2, 1937 • 7 cup championships • Over 200 wins • Won the Daytona 500 seven times
