  3. Thesis • Present an argument that engages the question at issue • Clearly and specifically worded • Limits the scope of the argument

  4. Define Key Terms • Define key terms • What terms (words, phrases, ideas) does a reader need to know in order to understand the argument

  5. Evidence/Reasons • Offer supporting reasons, explanations, evidence, and examples • Make the links between ideas clear • Make sure that reasons connect back clearly to the thesis • Specific focus on the complexities of the issue

  6. Acknowledging the Other Side • Acknowledge, accommodate, and refute opposing and/or differing points of view • This is also called the counterargument

  7. Conclusion • Wraps up the essay • Moves back to a general perspective on the issue
