  1. They must take heed to themselves • They must be guided in their work by God’s word • They must show themselves to be examples to the flock • They must willingly take the oversight of the congregation • They must take heed to all the flock • They must exercise rule in the congregation • They must feed the flock • They must watch over our souls Elders Elders’ Responsibilities to the Congregation’s Congregation

  2. Considered very briefly: Elders Must Members Must Feed – Eat Lead – Follow Be Examples – Imitate Them Teach – Learn Rule – Submit

  3. Our Responsibilities to the Elders We must Know the Elders 1 Thess.5:12– “But we beseech you, brethren, to know them that labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;” We must Esteem Them Highly in Love 1 Thess.5:13– “and to esteem them exceeding highly in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves.”

  4. Our Responsibilities to the Elders We must be Submissive to them Heb.13:17– “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit to them: for they watch in behalf of your souls, as they that shall give account; that they may do this with joy, and not with grief: for this were unprofitable for you.” We should willingly do all things the elders ask us to do

  5. Our Responsibilities to the Elders We must Not Rebuke an Elder 1 Tim.5:1– “Rebuke not an elder, but exhort him as a father; the younger men as brethren:” “Rebuke” is “to chastise with words, to chide, upbraid, rebuke” – Thayer We are to exhort elders as we would a father

  6. Our Responsibilities to the Elders We must Not Receive Charges Against Them 1 Tim.5:19– “Against an elder receive not an accusation, except at the mouth of two or three witnesses.” What should we do, then? Don’t gossip about it – 2 Thess.3:11; 1 Tim.5:13 Privately call on them to repent – Matt.18:15-17 We must Reprove Before All Those That Sin 1 Tim.5:20– “Them that sin reprove in the sight of all, that the rest also may be in fear.”

  7. Our Responsibilities to the Elders We must Remember and Follow Them Heb.13:7– “Remember them that had the rule over you, men that spake unto you the word of God; and considering the issue of their life, imitate their faith.” We Should Count Worthy of Double-Honor 1 Tim.5:17,18– “17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and in teaching. 18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn. And, The laborer is worthy of his hire.”

  8. Our Responsibilities to the Elders We Should Call the Elders When in Need Jas.5:14– “Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:” Jas.5:16– “Confess therefore your sins one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The supplication of a righteous man availeth much in its working.”
