How to Prepare for an Interview • Research the job and organization • Internet • Company Literature or Brochures • Company’s annual report, etc. • Be prepared to respond to questions about yourself • Example: What are your strengths and weaknesses? • Plan on what to wear to the interview • Project an image that matches the requirements of the job & company • Be as comfortable as possible • Reassess your skills, abilities, experiences and accomplishments before your interview • Practice for the interview

The Day of the Interview • Carry these items to the interview • Several copies of your resume • Copies of your References • Take a professional portfolio or folder to hold your resume, references and to take notes following the interview • Be sure to take clear directions in getting to your interview • Dress appropriately. First impressions matter. • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the interview. Treat the receptionist and other employees of the company with the upmost respect. Greet company employees with a smile, good eye contact and a firm handshake. • Leave your cell phone or other electronic devices in your car or at home.

  4. During the Interview • Maintain a professional posture and a positive tone of voice. Show excitement for the position. • If you are stumped on a question, you can always ask for a moment to think about it or ask to return to the question later. • Never criticize former employers, bosses or co-workers while discussing previous employment experiences. • At the end of the interview, collect a business card from each interviewer and thank the interviewer for their time.

  5. After the Interview • Send a ‘Thank You’ letter to the each interviewer within 1 to 2 days after the interview • Only 10% of candidates send ‘thank you’ letters, you may have an advantage if you send them • Take time to evaluate your performance • What went well in the interview • What needs improvement • Work on addressing areas of improvement

Examples of Interview Questions • How would you describe yourself? • What qualifications do you have for the position? • How do you work under pressure? • What do you consider to be your greatest strengths? Weaknesses? • What specific goals have you established for yourself for the next 10 years? • How do you determine or evaluate success? • How do you deal with conflict? • Tell me about accomplishments in which you take pride. Give examples. • Why did you seek a position with this company? • How do you work under pressure? • What motivates you to put forth your best effort? • Why should I hire you?
