  1. Only 2 documents required to apply for Importer Exporter Code It is essentially the first step towards starting an export or import business in India. Importer Exporter Code or IEC is a unique ten-digit number that is assigned by the DGFT on behalf of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. For new exporters, applying for IEC can be a complicated affair as it mandates several documents demanding on whether it’s proprietorship, a partnership or Private Ltd./Ltd. But now aspiring importers and exporters have reason to cheer. The Ministry of Commerce has brought into place measures that will ease the paperwork required for IEC. Only 2 documents are now mandatory for applying for an importer exporter code in India. The DGFT issued a notification regarding the same stating, “Only two documents are required to be uploaded/submitted along with the digital photograph while applying for IEC.” Previously, new exporters and importers were required to submit numerous documents. This included details of the entity/proprietor/partners/directors/managing trustee of the entity applying for IEC as well as the specifics of the signatory applicant. Reducing the paperwork for IEC further, DGFT has made it clear that only online applications for IEC or modification in IEC with digital signature will be accepted from April 1st of this year.
