  1. Comedic Conventions The Importance of Being Earnest

  2. Comedy of Manners • Amorous intrigues (love affairs) among the upper classes • Focus is on witty language, clever speech; insults and ‘putdowns’ are traded between characters; • Society is often made up of cliques that are exclusive with certain groups as the in-crowd, with everyone else on the peripheral

  3. Exaggeration • Making something more than it is; an overstatement or overemphasis “I was walking along when suddenly this enormous dog came up to me. It was as big as an elephant”.

  4. Incongruity • Something that seems out of time, place, or character genuine imitation

  5. Anticipation • Looking forward to something funny (Anticipation can be created with a plant-an idea, line, or action that shows up early in the play and is repeated.)

  6. Deus ex machina • An artificial contrivance used to resolve comedic plots In fiction writing, the phrase has been extended to refer to a sudden and unexpected resolution to a seemingly intractable problem in a plot-line, or what might be called an "Oh, by the way..." ending.

  7. Ambiguity • Double meaning (Puns are an excellent source of ambiguity, as are mistaken identities.) I can't recommend this book too highly."

  8. Pun • The humorous use of a word or phrase so as to emphasize or suggest its different meanings or applications .) Jack: It is very vulgar to talk like a dentist when one isn’t a dentist. It produces a false impression. Algernon: Well, that is exactly what dentists always do.

  9. Epigram • A brief, clever, and usually memorable statement The very essence of romance is uncertainty. If ever I get married, I’ll certainly try to forget the fact.

  10. Aphorisms • A concise statement of a principle The truth is rarely pure and never simple. Modern life would be very tedious if it were either, and modern literature a complete impossibility.
