What Are Our Goals? • The goals of Issues Conference are to help teens… • BECOMEmore involved in shaping public policy regarding youth issues. • BELIEVEthat they can bring about positive change in their community. • ACQUIREthe leadership skills they need to give leadership to local change efforts • LEARNand become knowledgeable about the issues that affect them
It’s A KERA-Friendly Program! • 10 KERA goals are met with this program including: • Students use a decision-making process to make an informed decision among options. (5.4) • Students effectively use interpersonal skills. (4.1) • Students demonstrate skills and habits that lead to future success. (2.37) Ask your 4-H agent for a complete listing of goals met!
When & Where Is It? • 2012 Issues Conference: November 15-18 • Held at Kentucky 4-H’s Lake Cumberland Educational Center
What Will Teens Do? BEFORE ISSUES CONFERENCE • Research local issues. • Compile a scrapbook on an issue of interest to them using articles, photos, pamphlets, etc.
What Will Teens Do? DURING ISSUES CONFERENCE • Form ‘Action Groups’ to share thoughts and concerns on issues facing teens. • Learn the process and skills for necessary to organize for community action back home.
What Will Teens Do? AFTER ISSUES CONFERENCE • Use the ideas and skills to make a positive impact on their community!
Is It All Work? • Issues Conference includes: • Costume Dance • Campfire Time • Social Interaction • Entertainment • Good Food Plus, you get a great “I’ve Got Issues” t-shirt!
