  3. switches

  4. INTRODUCTION • The device which is used to make or break a circuits is called switches. • The part of the switches that is moved to open or close a circuit is called switch pole. • Switch pole :- • One pole – Single pole switch • Two pole- Double pole switch • Three pole- Triple pole switch • Four pole- Four pole switch

  5. If moving contact of switch alternately opens and closes only one circuit ,it is called single throw type. • If moving contact of switch breaks one circuit while closing another then it is called double throw type.

  6. TOGGLE SWITCH • The different types switches are shown below: • TOGGLE SWITCH: • It has a projective arm which moves through a small arc causing contacts to either open or close. • When the arm moves from the OFF position to the ON position through the arc it closes the contacts of the electrical circuit.

  7. When it moves from the ON position to the OFF position it opens the contacts of electric circuit. • APPLICATION: • This types of switches are used in houses, in many electrical tools and industrial instruments.

  9. ROTARY SWITCH • ROTARY SWITCH: • A rotary switch operates with a twisting motion of the operating handle with at last two position . • One or more position of the switch may be momentary, requiring the operator to hold the switch in the position. • A rotary switch may have multiple cover to control the multiple circuits.

  10. One form of rotary switch consists of a spindle or “rotor” that has of arm or “spoke” which projects from it surface like a cam. • It has an array of terminals, arrangements in a circle around the rotor, each of which serves as contact for the “spoke” through which one or more number of electrical circuit can be connect to the rotor. • The switch contains layers to allow the use of multiple poles, each layer is equipment to one pole.

  11. Usually such a switch has a detent mechanism so it “click” from one active position to another rather than states in an intermediate position. • Rotary switch provides greater pole and throw capabilities than simple switches. • APPLICATIONS: • In industries, control of measuring instruments , switchgear, radio controller , to control the circuit

  12. ROTARY SWITCH

  13. MERCURY SWITCH • MERCURY SWITCH: • Mercury switch is a switch which is open and close an electrical circuit. • Mercury switch has a small amount of liquid mercury and also contains one or more sets of electrical contacts in glass envelope. • The envelope may also contain air, an inert gas or a vacuum. • Gravity is constantly pulling the drop of mercury to the lowest point in the envelope.

  14. When the switch is tilted in the appropriate direction, the mercury touches the set of contacts, thus completing electric circuit through those contacts. • Titling the switches the opposite direction causes the mercury to move way from that set of contacts , thus breaking circuit. • APLLICATIONS: • Mercury switches are used in roll sensing, pressure switches, vending , in bomb etc.

  15. MURCURY SWITCH

  16. PUSH BUTTON SWITCH • PUSH BOTTON SWITCH: • This switch closes the circuit when pressed and when released, comes back to its normal position. • Buttons are typically made out from hard material like plastic or metal. • APPLICATIONS: • This switches are used in calculators, push-button telephone, mobiles, kitchen appliances, doorbell switches.

  17. PUSH BUTTON SWITCH

  18. SLIDE SWITCH • SLIDE SWITCH: • This switch is ON and OFF the electric circuit by the linear motion of lever. • ON and OFF can be named on this switch that exiting the position of the switch can be known. • This switch is used in low voltage application.
