What’s Great at CHS • Debate Team is crushing big time national competition • 13 Members of the Senior Regional Orchestra • CHS Made AYP and is Fully Accredited • 6 Singers from CHS will be singing an Ashlawn Highlands Opera production • One student was chosen to participate in the Worthy Program, an engineering mentoring program sponsored by Northrop Grumman • 215 people attended our Chill & Grill Faculty Social • 45 people attended our follow-up Faculty Tailgate Party • 585 people attended the Freshman Orientation and Family Dinner • Through the “Save Our History Grant” two Social Studies Teachers have formed a partnership with the History Channel and the Charlottesville/Albemarle Historical Society

What’s Great at CHS • One teacher spent three weeks studying Creative Writing at Exeter College at Oxford University in Oxford England; the same teacher went to Japan to study as a Fulbright Scholar • Our yearbook staff is building a name for itself, winning Third place in competition this summer • One teacher is the Governor’s School Outstanding Educator for this year • One teacher has been chosen as a Teaching Fellow by “The Virginia Experiment” Teaching American History Grant for the 2008-2009 school year • The halls are clearing between classes • Attendance is up • Discipline is down

My challenges to you • Think of what is best for kids first • Check your baggage at the door • Challenge your assumptions about “how it has always been done” • Fail Forward Fast (IBM) • Provide high levels of Customer Service to students, colleagues, and parents (yes, in that order) • Ask yourself: What would happen if I taught every kid like they had an IEP specifically geared toward their learning style?

Explain. • What does “high levels of achievement” look like for each kid? • Can all children learn at high levels of achievement? Explain. • What should our expectations be? Are they realistic? • Could our communication be better? How?
