NewSurveyofRetiredWomenPrioritizessignificantAchievementsinWomen’sRightsduringtheirLifetimeNewSurveyofRetiredWomenPrioritizessignificantAchievementsinWomen’sRightsduringtheirLifetime • Holiday Retirementspotlights women’sachievementsincelebrationandhonorofWomen’sHistory Month • LakeOswego,OR,March15, 2015–Americanhistoryhaslong beenassociated with significanteventsand notablewomen whohavemadeinvaluablecontributionstosociety inthepast century.These womenhaveachieved greatnessin theirlivesbywinning theright tovotein1920;attaining permanentstatusinthemilitaryin1948; and breaking male-dominated barriers tobecoming astronauts,racecar drivers,businessand militaryleaders,politicians,and professional sportsfigures. • IncelebrationofWomen’sHistoryMonth,4,132HolidayRetirement femaleresidentsresponded to afour-questionsurveyabout the significanceofwomen’srights,womenasrolemodels,andhopesforwomen inthefuture. • 69percent offemaleresidentspolled feel winning therighttovotewasthegreatestaccomplishment forwomeninthe20thcenturyandtoday. • 33percent ofsurveyparticipantsfelt thatEleanorRoosevelt and hervocalsupport ofAfrican-American civilrightsposesherasthebest rolemodelforyoung women. • 35percent believetheU.S.willelect itsfirst femalepresident withinthenext 10years;however,it isalsoimportant tonotethat18percent ofseniorwomensurveyed believetherewillneverbeafemalepresident. • 47percent ofthosesurveyedlist theirbiggest hopeforwomeninthefutureasachievingequalpaywiththeirmalecounterparts. • Inaddition tothesurvey,HolidayRetirementreceivedstoriesabout inspirational womenand theirroleinhelping toshapewomen’srolesasweknowthem today. • “Therearethousandsofamazingwomenwho liveatHolidayRetirement communities,”saidJamisonGosselin,vicepresident ofmarketing,communications,andresident enrichment forHolidayRetirement.“Overcasual conversations,ourresidentsmaylearn theirneighborwasaformer Olympicmedalist,thefirst AfricanAmericanfemalebasketballplayer,oreventherecipientofa prestigiousmilitaryaward.Thesewomenarea greatpartofourhistoryand ourfuture.” • Manyof thesewomenhaveplayed anactiveroleinhistoryand nowsharetheirachievementswith fellowresidentsinsenior livingcommunitiesacrossthecountry.Hereareafewof their stories:

Lillie C.,first African Americanfemale basketballplayer At 90-years-young,Lilliewasrecentlyhonoredasoneof thefirstAfricanAmericanwomen toplaybasketball inNorth Carolina.And forthismomentousachievement,Lilliewasnamed totheHall ofFameatAtkinsHighSchool inNorth Carolina.Lilliegrewup inWinston-Salem,North Carolina,duringatimeofcivil unrestin theSouth,butshewasdetermined tobetreated equally.Shetookpartin protestsand refused toleavelunchcountersatNorthCarolinaA&TUniversity.Lillie considersherselfasoneof theoriginal freedomriders.ShecurrentlylivesatForsythCourt in Winston-Salem. NevaH., former GrandPrixdriver andchampion At 92-years-old,Nevaknowswhatitisliketohaveaneed for speed.She’saformerSeniorMalibuGrand Prixdriver—and champion.Neva’sfavoritepartofracing: “Beating all theothermen drivers.”Shebeganracingin1970,onceherchildrenwerefull-grown.Today,Neva proudly displaysherawardsatTheWorthington in Gahanna,Ohio.
