Annie P.,lifelongchampion of civilrights Annie,aresident atRanchoVillage in Palmdale,California,iswell-knownforher lifelongeffortsasacivil rightsactivist; infact,shecharteredachapterof the NAACP inthePacoimaneighborhoodofLosAngelesin1945.WhenMartinLutherKing,Jr., wasassassinated,sheand herhusband charteredaplanetoattend thefuneral.Sheparticipated intheprocessionthatwalkedbehind hiscasket formorethan3.5miles.Youcan alsofindhernameengraved inthewallat TheMartinLutherKing,Jr.CenterforNonviolentSocial Change. JudyD.,1952Olympian It was63yearsagothatJudy,now90,represented theUnited Statesinthe1952Helsinki Games,winning asilvermedalin breaststroke.Judywas bornand raised insoutheastPortlandandcreditshighschool with whereher Olympicdreams tookhold.ThisOlympiannowresidesatEdgewoodDownsinBeaverton,Oregon. Lillie C.,first African Americanfemale basketballplayer At 90-years-young,Lilliewasrecentlyhonoredasoneof thefirstAfricanAmericanwomen toplaybasketball inNorth Carolina.And forthismomentousachievement,Lilliewasnamed totheHall ofFameatAtkinsHighSchool inNorth Carolina.Lilliegrewup inWinston-Salem,North Carolina,duringatimeofcivil unrestin theSouth,butshewasdetermined tobetreated equally.Shetookpartin protestsand refused toleavelunchcountersatNorthCarolinaA&TUniversity.Lillie considersherselfasoneof theoriginal freedomriders.ShecurrentlylivesatForsythCourt in Winston-Salem. NevaH., former GrandPrixdriver andchampion At 92-years-old,Nevaknowswhatitisliketohaveaneed for speed.She’saformerSeniorMalibuGrand Prixdriver—and champion.Neva’sfavoritepartofracing: “Beating all theothermen drivers.”Shebeganracingin1970,onceherchildrenwerefull-grown.Today,Neva proudly displaysherawardsatTheWorthington in Gahanna,Ohio.
