  1. The People, The Planet and the Pocketbook: How a Green Builder Program Can Avoid Emissions Using Solar Energy Presented by Dona Stankus, NC Solar Center NC DENR/DAQ Mercury/CO2 Workshop McKimmon Center, Raleigh, NC April 20, 2004

  2. This project is sponsored by: College of Engineering

  3. What is Green Building? • Green Building is… • Opinion and Facts (with the usual disclaimers!) • Integration of human needs and desires into a healthy whole system that supports and sustains the requirements of a healthy natural environment • Consideration of the building as a whole system from conception, through design and construction and for the duration of the life of the building • The building industry is the largest industry consumer of the world’s resources, consuming 36% of the world’s energy usage(Energy Information Administration www.eia.doe.gov)

  4. Green Building Design Issues These 6 elements are loosely based on considerations in the LEED Rating System for Green Buildings- commercial guidelines (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, developed by the US Green Building Council) • Sustainable Site Issues • Water Efficiency Issues • Energy & Atmosphere Issues • Materials & Resources Issues • Indoor Environmental Quality Issues • Maintenance and Operations www.usgbc.org

  5. What is a Green Builder Program? • Market movement • Usually voluntary—NC plan is • An incentive program for Builders and Owners • Must meet specific requirements • 30+ programs across the US and growing • www.nahbrc.org • Residential, Commercial, State and General

  6. Green Builder Program Examples • EarthCraft House • SunBuilt • BuiltGreen Colorado

  7. Successes and Opportunities • Successes of Existing Builder Programs • Broad, whole building approach • Incorporate Owner Education with Builder Marketing support efforts • Make the program mean something through consultation or verification • Partnership between HBA’s and non-profit support groups • Opportunities for Builder Programs • Incorporate more energy security and renewable energy focus into programs • Some programs have renewables as 20% of their program, others it is less than 5%

  8. Why Build Green? • Energy • Resource Conservation • Indoor Air Quality • Safety • Affordability • Security

  9. Market Research-People • Consumers are asking for it… • Survey conducted by Professional Builder Magazine in 2000 and 2001

  10. Market Research-Pocketbook • Consumers believe they will get… • Pocketbook Issues

  11. Market Research-Planet Percent of Total Site Energy Consumption by End Use, 1990 RESIDENTIAL Buildings

  12. Research-Planet • How do Buildings effect Carbon Dioxide Emissions • …and other greenhouse gas emissions?

  13. Research-Planet
