  2. Starter • Logon • In a word processor, list all the different things in the world around us (society) which is automatically controlled by computers.

  3. Objectives • To understand what is meant by the term data logging. • Know why we use data logging in society. • Know the role of sensors in control technology.

  4. What is Data Logging? • “The automatic collection of data using sensors” • Automatically recording data using different types of sensors. input output PROCESSING Sensors record data and put it into a computer system Data is displayed in some way (screen, print) Data is processed in some way. E.g. a graph or mathematical calculations are performed.

Where is control used around us? • At home • Washing machines • Microwave cookers • Dishwashers • Electric kettles • Fridges • Video recorders • Remote control television • Central heating systems • Burglar Alarm system • External Security lights • Electronic Toys • Games • Smart Meters At work Air conditioning systems Lifts Automatic doors Factory robots Outside the home Traffic light systems Car park barriers Cars – engine management systems Lifts Rides at theme parks Computer controlled lighting systems at discos and concerts Remote controlled car

  7. How do we record them? SENSORS 

  8. The Feedback System • E.g. Central Heating • You have set your thermostat to 23 degrees. • INPUT: The heat sensor would read the temperature of your home. • PROCESS: Would check the recorded temperature against the temperature you have set (23 degrees). • IF IT IS <23 THEN the OUTPUT would be a signal to switch the heating on. • IF IT IS >=23 THEN the OUTPUT would be a signal to switch the heating off. • IF the heating is switched on, the system would keep checking the temperature, by getting FEEDBACK. Once it reaches 23, the heating would then switch off. Feedback is where the output of a system affects the input.
