  1. O.P.E.NOlder People Engaging New Technology

  2. Summary: The O.P.E.N. digital project will address the specific training needs of the elderly population of West Kilbride, Largs, Millport Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston. This project will train this sector of the population in the use of new technology, i.e. Skype, social media and provide awareness of security issues related to internet use. Digital Champions, specifically trained for this project, will provide the assistance to the participants of the project. They will be recruited from different youth organisations within the North Ayrshire area.

  3. Aims: Ensure that older citizens: • Feel valued. • Understand how new technology may support them in maintaining their physical and mental health. • Feel included in what is going on in their community. • Reduce the potential to become socially isolated. • Awareness of internet usage, i.e. be ‘computer-savvy’. • Provide a bridge between the young and older members of the community, two groups that traditionally may view each other with apprehension.

  4. Aims (Cont.) • Improve their quality of life with our Digital 5-A-Day by being: • Digitally connected. • Active. • Curious. • Life long-learners. • Able to give and receive. Provide with training experience that may be in the benefit of future employment of the Digital Champions.

  5. Action Plan • West Kilbride Phase 1 • Training of 10 Digital Champions in West Kilbride. Phase 2 • In partnership with Youth Services and Library Staff roll out the lessons of the pilot project by using the Digital Champions to train the over 55’s.

  6. Action Plan • Largs and Millport Phase 1 • Training of 10 Digital Champions in Millport. Phase 2 • In partnership with Youth Services and Library Staff roll out the lessons of the pilot project by using the Digital Champions to train the over 55’s.

  7. Action Plan • Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston Phase 1 • Training of 10 Digital Champions in Ardrossan. Phase 2 • In partnership with Youth Services and Library Staff roll out the lessons of the pilot project by using the Digital Champions to train the over 55’s.

  8. Action Plan • Continuous action research into the effects the pilot is having in all participants and in the community. • Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the impact of the project.

  14. Conclusions. This project has the potential to become a successful and engaging program that may allow older citizens: • To become more engaged and involved with the world. • Given the worldwide connectivity this project may support their relationships with members of their family or friends living in faraway places. • By allowing them to understand that technology is to be embraced and not feared.

  15. Conclusions:Cont. 4. Additionally, it may provide essential ‘working’ experience for our young people. 5. As well as aiding in the development of mutual sensitivity between the two groups of participants, i.e. the young Champions and the older ‘students’.
