  4. Course: Prerequisite: Architectural Design IV Semester: 2nd 2008 -2009 Class location (Campus): Gaza, Studio

  5. Course Description: • The focus of our discussions this semester is the design of mixed use buildings, complexes, mix of residential, commercial, tourism or public functions. • The course intend to cover the basics and principles needed for designing large scale projects which is in architectural terms usually mixeduse buildings or complexes. Accessibility, parking spaces, relationships between different functions ..etc. .

  6. How important is project programming and the interrelation between different functions within the complexes. • Also how the exterior and interior spaces is organised and represented.

  7. The semester is divided into three parts: The first part is analysis report showing the project programme and contents (two weeks in duration). the second part of the semester is three day sketch problem (two – three) along the semester. While the third part of the semester is the MAIN PROJECT the final project (13-14 weeks in duration)

Discussions will cover but not limited to the following topics, Architectural styles of mixed use buildings; Environmental issues related to mixed use buildings; Exterior and interior spaces of mixed use buildings; Lighting, ventilations, and materials of mixed use buildings; Project programme, functions, linkages, areas, accessibility and forms,

The objectives of this semester are: • to develop each student’s ability to start project programme (functions versus areas) and assessment in an architectural proposal • to develop each student’s ability to represent an idea, or set of ideas, in an architectural proposal; • to prompt a consideration of a design methodology; • to prompt a consideration of what is required to create significant exterior and interior spaces in large scale projects or mixed use complexes; • to provide the students with models of mixed use complexes (usually combination of residential, commercial, administrative, and tourism functions) in the neighbouring countries,

  10. Course Evaluation: Project grades are a reflection of the Process of developing a design proposal and the Products that describe the proposal. Both the process and the final products will be considered in the evaluation process.

  11. Course Materials: • This course has no text book • Deliverable • Essays • Handouts both in Arabic and English • Slide shows,,,

  12. Course work: There will be two different main projects presented to the students, the first in Gaza, (Feras market), and the second in Khanyounis ( Al-Mawasi area). Students will work the main project in pairs (2 students each group). Students are encouraged to work individually.

  13. Student grades are calculated according to their performance in the following work during the course : • Attendance 05% • Project analysis report 10% • Min. 3 Sketch problems 25% • Project Design 60% 100%

  14. Project design : 60% • Project development 40% • Preliminary jury (Mid term) 25% • Final jury ( Final ) 35% 100%

  15. Attendance Policy: Students are expected to stick to the university attendance policy, Class attendance is mandatory. Preparation for, and participation in, class discussions and reviews is expected---and a consideration in determining each student’s final grade.
