  1. Better Buildings By Design 2010 • Efficiency Vermont is a Registered Provider with The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems. Creditearned on completion of this program will be reported to CES Records for AIA members. Certificates of Completion for non-AIA members are available on request. This program is registered with the AIA/CES for continuing professional education. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using, distributing, or dealing in any material or product. Questions related to specific materials, methods, and services will be addressed at the conclusion of this presentation. Light/Space/Design

  2. Learning Objectives • Deep Lighting Retrofits and Relighting • At the end of this program, participants will be able to: • Achieve greater cost savings in Deep Lighting Retrofits by moving beyond the simple one-for-one standard replacement practice, to a customized process of intelligent retrofit and relighting application. • Utilize case studies of CAD-based lighting design analysis to significantly increase initial installation and overall energy cost savings. • Discuss how process variations affect bidding lighting retrofit projects for building owners, contractors, and electrical suppliers. • Explore the quantifiable and less quantifiable benefits for re-lighting, rather than retrofitting for several types of lighting projects. . Light/Space/Design

  3. Retrofit vs. Relighting Similarities Relighting Differences Luminaire replacement Potential modification of luminaire locations Consider changes to room reflectance Model with CAD based lighting software Similar to renovation and commercial fit-up • Evaluate potential changes to light levels • Evaluate existing lighting system • Replace lamp/ballast technology, diffusers, etc where applicable • Add or modify lighting controls Light/Space/Design

  4. Why Relighting? • What option best meets owner’s need • Greater Energy Savings & Options • Lighting Quality – performance related • Image Upgrade • Best Return on Investment Light/Space/Design

  5. Examples: Gardeners Supply • Motivation • Energy cost savings • Kilawatt Partners- ESCO suggestion • Green Image • Light improvement- reduce LLF • 120,000 sf Distribution Center/Warehouse Light/Space/Design

  6. Gardeners Supply • Investment Value • Previous electric use $80,000/yr • Post retrofit electric use (monitored) $40,500/yr • Design and Analysis Investment • (paid over 1 yr) $20,000 +/- • Fixture Cost $42,000 • Installation Cost $15,000 • EVT Investment $15,000 +/- • EPACT Tax Credit $72,000 (up to $0.60.sf) • Process • Investment of time and $ for evaluation and redesign • CAD Based modeling included sample of each area • Existing Ceiling outlets dictate luminaires location (up to 8’) • Detailed luminaire schedule incl. cord and plug and occ sensors • Owner direct purchased luminaires • Contracted for installation, difficult access issues Light/Space/Design

  7. Gardeners Supply Light/Space/Design

  8. Example: South Main Auto • Motivation: • Energy cost savings • Electrical contractor- recommendation • USDA Rural Development Grant • Improve light in service bays • 5,080 sf Auto/Truck Repair Shop Light/Space/Design

  9. South Main Auto • Investment Value • Audit and Redesign Cost <$1,800 • Previous annual electric use 63,300 kwh • Post retrofit 32,020 kwh • Due to CVPS rate structure, cost savings were not proportional • Previous annual cost $10,545/yr • Post retrofit cost $6,230/yr • EVT Investment $1,800 • USDA-RDev Grant $4,044 • Process • Electrical contractor was efficiency program savvy • USDA Grant requires independent evaluation and recommendation • Existing lighting not task oriented • Redesign needed for correct light placement • CAD-based light modeling showed effect of cars on lifts • Contractor purchased and installed, owner financed $10,000 +/- Light/Space/Design

  10. South Main Auto CAD Based lighting simulation, used to evaluate illuminance when simple mathematical models are inadequate. Here, lighting is needed under vehicles, as well as for work bench and general circulation. Light/Space/Design

  11. Example: Vermont Precision Tool • Motivation: • Lighting Quality for Manufacturing • Existing 1000w MH system not coord. w/ HVAC locations • Energy Cost Savings • 14,100 sf machine shop Light/Space/Design

  12. Vermont Precision Tool • Investment Value: • Audit/Redesign Options $1,600 • Annual Electric Use 155,520 kwh • Options included reductions in electrical usage from: • 20% for retrofit lamp/ballasts + new fixtures • 26% for all new MH luminaires • 62% for all new fluorescent low bay • Process: • Current lighting was inadequate • Mfr reps suggestions confused owners, who contracted for independent recommendation • Additional lighting locations needed, installation costs common to all solutions • CAD-based modeling needed to include HVAC obstructions • Most costly option was best overall for quality and efficiency • Owners able in invest in upgrade Light/Space/Design

  13. Example:Photogarden Retail Store • Motivation: • Poor lighting quality in other locations • Other retailers recommended independent lighting consultant • Looking for excellent light as well as aesthetic qualities • 2000 sf retail store and workshop fit-up Light/Space/Design

  14. Photogarden Retail Store • Investment Value: • Redesign cost $1600, no modeling • Store fixture layout indicated 75w halogen track lighting @ 3.0w/sf • Redesign with MH track technology brought this down to 1.0 w/sf +/- • Less track needed, and 50% fewer track heads needed, which kept costs down • EVT Incentive of $75 per track head reduced incremental cost to $0. • Process: • Owners worked directly with lighting designer –most efficient communication wise • Electrician involvement would have improved process • Site visit essential, high ceiling allowed most efficient layout • Mfr layout did not account for field conditions, daylighting, controls • Electrical contractor not aware of VT Energy Code requirements Light/Space/Design

  15. Retail Store Modeling Light/Space/Design
