  1. Today we will use the distributive property in equations and expressions with variables. analyze= investigate

  2. Do you watch something called a television? In the word television, you have a base word and a prefix. Tele is the prefix and it means far away and vision means to see. So television means to see things that are not close to the observer

  3. Complex words A base or a root word combined with an prefix and/or a suffix.

  4. Prefix: a word part that is added to the beginning of a base word to create a new word • Example: When I went to the Dodger game I got Fernando Valenzuela’s autograph. • Auto is the root word. It means self. • Graph is the root word. It means write. • Together autograph means when someone write their own name or signature.

  5. Base Word: A word that can stand alone, but can change meanings when a prefix or a suffix is added. Example: sufficient • When I looked in the cabinets, there were sufficient forks for everyone to eat. • Sufficient means enough • When you add a prefix like self, it becomes self-sufficient and it changes the meaning. • The nation grows enough grain to be self-sufficient. • Self-sufficient now means to be able to get one’s own needs without any help

  6. Root word: is a word that has nothing added at the beginning or the end. It cannot stand alone, like a base word but rather needs a prefix and/or a suffix. • Liter is a root word that means letter. • When we add a suffix like –ate which means, to make, it changes the meaning. • Literate means to make letters or understand what letters mean like being able to read.

  7. Let’s look at some more prefixes….....un=not, none

  8. Let’s look at some base/root words! • certain • common • conscious • decided • expected • mistakable • necessary • tidy • wise • worthy

  9. certain= sure I was certain that I would score proficient on the CST’s.

  10. common=the usual Bad dreams are fairly common among children.

  11. conscious= aware She was conscious that Marie was eavesdropping on her conversation.

  12. decided=make a choice Tina decided to go to Rome for her summer vacation.

  13. expected=think that something will happen A little nervousness is only to be expected when you are starting a new job.

  14. mistake=something that is wrong “You can't mistake her. She's the one with the long red hair” said the student.

  15. necessary= what you need to have or need to do The police are advising motorists to travel only if their journey is absolutely necessary.

  16. Tidy=neatly arranged The child’s room was very neat and orderly, his brother was jealous of him being tidy.

  17. Wise=know a lot It's wise to check whether the flight times have changed before you leave for the airport.

  18. Worthy=to deserve respect Barry Sanders set a goal that was worthy of any of the great footballers of the world

  19. Why is it important to know how to analyze words? • It’s important to know how to analyze words so that: • we can understand the sentence • we can be better readers • we can read and write sentences correctly

  20. How are we going to analyze complex words? • Readthe sentence. • Readall of your choices. • Think about what each base and prefix mean. • Choose the word the BEST fits the sentence.
