  4. THREAD COUNT In textile terminology - yarns are numbered from 1 to 200 (sometimes, it can go even up to 300 or 400). The thickness of the yarn is indicated by a "count" and is a universally* accepted number. A 200 thread count yarn of cotton means the same worldwide. *please see next slide for another usage in USA KNOW YOUR FABRICS SERIES

  5. *POSSIBLE THREAD COUNT MEANING IN USA In the U.S, sometimes, thread count refers to the number of yarns per square inch. e.g., a cotton duck can have 84 threads per inch on the warp direction and 28 threads per inch on the weft (fill) direction. The thread count is referred to in this case as a 84 x 28. In a strict sense, count always refers to the thickness of the thread. And "construction" is the term that refers to the number of threads per inch in the warp and the fill directions. But one should be aware that customers do mix up these terms KNOW YOUR FABRICS SERIES

  6. WHT DOES A THREAD COUNT MEAN? A thread count is a measure of the "coarseness" or thickness of the yarn. Unlike the common perception, a 200 count thread is NOT thicker than a 100 count thread. In fact, it is the opposite. If you twist two threads of 200 count yarn together, it will have the thickness equivalent to one thread of a 100 count yarn. So a 100 count thread is twice as thick as a 200 count thread. Hence the 100 count thread is referred to as a "coarser" yarn when compared to a 200 count thread. KNOW YOUR FABRICS SERIES

  7. THREAD COUNT FOR CANVAS FABRICS In the canvas world, often fabrics are woven using single yarns or multiple yarns between the thread count of 1 and 20 (some exceptions are there). Fabrics woven as a canvas with such yarn counts have a coarser weave. Which means there will be comparatively more air-spaces or pores. The fabric is less densely woven because you cannot pack thicker yarns too tightly. The fabric will also have a harder texture (fabric feels rough in comparison to a shirt or pant fabric).   8. THREAD COUNT FOR GARMENT FABRICS In the garment world, most often fabrics are woven using single yarns between the thread count of 21 and up to 60s (sometimes up to the 80s). Fabrics woven for garments with such yarn counts have a tighter weave and a smoother texture. KNOW YOUR FABRICS SERIES
