LITERACY BLOCK FRAMEWORK • PL 221 Meeting – Based on results of data • 230 COMBINED MINUTES FOR: • Literacy (minimum 135 minutes) • Math (minimum 50 minutes) • Success Time (30 minutes) • Morning Routine, including Town Hall (15 minutes after 9:00 am bell) • LEAVES Minimum 55 minutes for: • Science/Social Studies Inquiries • Transitions • Additional Literacy Block

LITERACY BLOCK FRAMEWORK • PL 221 Meeting • minimum135 minute Literacy Block • Interactive Read Aloud: 10 minutes • Science/Social Studies connection, if possible • Word work can come from IRA • Writing mini-lesson from IRA • Guided Reading: 60-75 minutes • Independent writing/connected to reading • Self-Selected Reading • Writing Mini-Lesson: 10 – 12 minutes • Emotional Hook • Direct Instruction (modeling) • Guided Practice/Independent Practice (modeling opportunity)

  25. Schmoker’s 30 Minute Meeting • Before the meeting: • Agenda – distributed in advance • Recording tools – flipchart, whiteboard, computer, etc. ready • Designated task – timekeeper, recorder, & facilitator set a head of time

Each member offers strategies that were effective in reaching the goal set at last meeting (5 min.) • Chief Challenges – What is the urgent concern, problem, or obstacle to progress or better results? Use Quality Tools (3-5 min.)

Use Quality Tools (8-10 min.) • Action Plan – Which solution might be best for the team to focus on between now & next meeting? Responsibilities for next meeting? (10 min.) • After Meeting: • Team leader distributes a memo documenting the team’s focus between now & the next meeting.

  35. Time to Reflect How might you use the Affinity tool in a staff meeting? Where can the Quadrant Chart be effective in planning professional development? How do you create systemic change in a school? Share how you have used a quality tool in your school. Share your next step when you return to school. Share a question you have with the group, and have the group help problem solve. Lead a quick plus/delta with your table about the modeling activity you just completed.
