  1. Christians can live more carefree than Alfred E. Newman.

  2. Sermon on the Mount

  3. Matthew 5 Jesus taught 1-12 ... Attitudes God requires 13-19 ...Application of those attitudes 20 ... Don’t emulate the Pharisees 21-26 ... SpiritualNature of the Law

  4. The Law regulated motives, not just external actions. I John 3: 15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

  5. Matthew 6 Pharisaical Hypocrisy 1-4 ... Hypocritical alms giving 5-15 ...Hypocritical public praying 16-18 ... Hypocritical public fasting 19-24 ... The sin of greed 25-34 ...The sin of worry

  6. Sin is first of all an internal thing, it is a matter of the heart. Proverb 23: 7 For as he thinks within himself, so he is.

  7. Mark 7: 20-23 And He was saying, “That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22 deeds of coveting and wickedness , as wellas deceit, sensuality, envy, slander , pride and foolishness. 23All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”

  8. God is intimately familiar withevery person’s heart Revelation 2: 23 ... all the churches will know that I am He who searches the mindsand hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.

  9. God’s Law was designed to mold hearts. James 1: 14-15 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

  10. Our lesson will focus on one internal sin. It is easily hidden, but few even try. The Sin Of Worry, Anxiety.

  11. I. Worry involves the sin of greed. Most worry can be traced back to the desire to possess things.

  12. God provides so don’t sweat the small stuff ... Don’t worry ! Matt. 6: 25a Therefore , I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on.

  13. Do not worry is a direct command. AND Jesus here makes it clear that worry is a serious sin.

  14. Philippians 4: 6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  15. We turn our problems over to God. I Peter 5: 6-7 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

  16. This command does not require fatalistic unpreparedness. - No Savings - No 401-K - No Insurance

  17. The scriptures rebuff unpreparedness. - II Thes. 3: 10 ... No work ... No eat - Prov. 27: 23-27 ...Prepare for future - Prov. 6: 6-8 ... Imitate the ants - Genesis... The preparations of Joseph

  18. II. Worry involves the sin of idolatry. Worship of “Mamuna.” 

  19. Vs. 24( NKJV ) No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. “Mammon” is a transliterated “Mammon” is a transliterated from Mamuna.

  20. The desire for earthly things as idolatry. I John 2: 15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. We must choose .. God or the world.

  21. James 4: 4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.( cf- Col. 3: 5 ) All relationships with God are exclusive.

  22. Jesus is urging His followers to trust God to care for them. - He takes care of the birds - He takes care of the flowers - He values you above them

  23. Our eternal God is the God of both the past, the present and the future Psalm 31: 14-15 But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord, I say, “You are my God.” 15 My times are in Your hand; Deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from those who persecute me.

  24. III. Worry involves the sin of unbelief. This is the main reason worry is not a “little sin.” Vs. 30 – You of little faith

  25. Things are never out of God’s control ... even in the midst of calamity. In every circumstance we have opportunity to glorify God by trusting in Him completely.

  26. When you worry about earthly things you are acting like the unbelievers. Vs. 32 ... ( Jesus said ... ) “For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.”

  27. Trust God to take care of you, and devote yourself to Him. Vs. 33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

  28. VI. Some practical lessons to remember from this text. The only cure for worry is to seek God above all else and Trust Him to take care of you.

  29. Worldly cares threaten spiritual wellbeing Mark 4: 18-19 And others are the ones on whom seed was sown among the thorns; these are the ones who have heard the word, 19 but the worries of theworld, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

  30. We can’t focus on two targets at the same time.

  31. Romans 8: 5-7a For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God, ...

  32. It is absurd and irrational to borrow trouble from tomorrow. Vs. 34 So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

  33. God gives the grace to bear up under the troubles He allows to come on us today. Lamentations 3: 22-23( ESV ) The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.

  34. I Corinthians 10: 13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

  35. The Christian’s walk with the Lord is a day-by-day experience. Matthew 6: 11 “Give us this day our daily bread.” Exodus 16: 15-24 The lesson taught by the manna.

  36. Fear and doubt should never be a factor in the Christian’s world view.

  37. II Timothy 1: 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. I John 4: 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, ...

  38. Why Worry ? Cast all your anxieties on Him for He cares for you. I Pet. 5: 7 Seek first the kingdom of God and .. Mat 6:33

  39. Come ! Jesus will receive you now.
