  1. Thursday, February 25th When X = 8 Bell Ringer: Simplify 2. It was -2 at the beginning of the bears game. The temperature changed by -17 during the game. What was the temp. at the end of the game?

  2. Let’s Review: HW from last night

  3. Solving Two-Step Equations • Go backwards through the order of operations • Undo each operation • Get the variable by itself

  4. Work backwards through the Order of operations -parenthesis -exponents -multiplication and division from left to righ -addition and subtraction from left to right

  5. Example #1 – Solve the equation Explanation Math 1. Original equation 2. Add 17 to both sides 3. -17+17=0 and 60+17=77 4. Divide both sides by 7 5. 7/7=1 and 77/7=11 Solution

  6. Check your answer Solution: m=11 Equation: 7m-17=60 Substitute 11 for m 7(11)-17=60 77-17=60 60=60

  7. Example #2 – Solve the equation Explanation Math 1. Original equation 2. Subtract 21 from both sides 3. 21-21=0 and 14-21=-7 4. Divide both sides by 7 5. 8/8=1 and 8(-7)=-56 Solution

  8. Let’s Check Our Answer Solution: -56 Equation: (w/8)+21=14 Substitute -56 for w (-56/8)+21=14 -7+21=14 14=14

  9. Example #3 – Solve the equation Explanation Math 1. Original equation 2. Add 6 to both sides 3. -6+6=0 and -10+6=-7 4. Divide both sides by 7 5. (3/2)(2/3)=1 and (3/2)-4=-6 Solution

  10. Check your answer Solution: w=-6 Equation: 2/3n-6=-10 Substitute -6 for w: 2/3(-6)-6=-10 -4-6=-10 -10=-10

  11. Try these one on your own

  12. Today’s activity Everybody has: • A note card facedown • A pen/pencil and a calculator • You will have minute and a half to complete the problem • Then a minute and a half to check you partner

  13. Note Card Equations Card A Card B Card C Card E Card D Card F

  14. ACT Problem of the Day Which equation has a solution of -5?
